Canterbury weekend with our German Rotary Friends

PLEASURES and PLUSES of TWINNING

2011 has seen the bond with our German twin club of Hermeskeil Hunsrueck, near Trier, grow stronger both socially and practically.

F

ollowing a happy 2010 reunion in Berlin, a good number from

Hermeskeil club joined us in August last year for an enjoyable weekend in Kent. Most Germans geographically have rare chances of “seasiding”, hence our choice of Canterbury as a base with excursions to Broadstairs and Walmer Castle.

parts of the City and of course in its stunning cathedral.

Victorians enjoyed their break by the sea.

or the evening we had our Canter- bury Hotel’s facilities to ourselves

for our Anglo-German party of nearly fifty. We enjoyed our reunion meal together

swapping memories,

experiences of the weekend and plans for the future. We are looking forward to 2012’s reunion, planned already to take place in Cologne.

O

ur twinning has already resulted in worthwhile Rotary grant-aided

projects. The first, initiated by our German friends, related to encouraging Brazilian street kids away from criminality, tempting them with band music, football and providing equipment for the collection and delivery of waste for recycling and income. Thus Rotarians in Brazil, Germany and Great Britain combined with matching grants to fund a significant ongoing project from which reports are most encouraging. More recently we have been happy to jointly support an initiative from a Sri Lankan Rotary club to help replace an old ruined farmers’ reservoir. One hundred subsistence farmer families will be able to remain where they have farmed for more than a century and not be tempted to decamp to the City slums. Our German friends have happily joined with us in contributing and Foundation has already agreed a matching grant so that the work can now proceed without delay.

I

nternational fellowship between Hornchurch & Upminster and

Hermeskeil Clubs is clearly a close one, and the service we can offer together very worthwhile.
