Interview
“I started a mini trading floor in my living room and gradually, more and more of my friends and family joined me as I taught them trading strategies”
he has received on his road to success. “Sir Richard Branson said you must delegate early. With most entrepreneurs, their business is their baby, and they want to maintain as much control and involvement in it as possible. Whilst this is understandable, unfortunately, it also means that they end up taking too much on for too long. The key to growing and sustaining a successful business is to systemize it early on; employ good people who you can trust to undertake certain elements, allowing you to concentrate on the overall picture, and most importantly, the next step.
The second piece of advice was from a property developer based in Dubai who told me, ‘You can’t think and work at the same time’. In terms of running a business, this couldn’t be more apt. When you’re caught up in the everyday running and legwork, you aren’t able to focus on making strategic decisions about the direction you need to take. Create time and space for yourself to think before you jump back into the action.” How about specific tips that he would offer up
to a budding entrepreneur? “Every entrepreneur has to take risks, but I’d say always keep these as low as possible, do your research and take calculated punts. As cliché as it sounds, cash is king. Make sure you always have reserve funds in case some of your ideas don’t play out the way you intend, which invariably happens to us all at some point.
Also, if you’re launching a new service or product, it’s a great idea to look at what’s working in industries similar to yours and map across those strategies. For example, when I started Knowledge to Action, I saw parallels between the business models used in the property industry, and the direction in which I saw trader coaching companies developing. Use existing models, analyse where they can be enhanced, and improve on them.”
After hearing a fascinating story of the life of a hugely successful trader that was now taking every opportunity to share his wealth of knowledge with the world, I urge Greg in light of a huge public profile and rising entrepreneurial fame to confess to any deep, dark secrets. “Very few people know that I used to be a child actor! I was a member of the ARTS theatre school in Norwich and took part in dozens of productions. I even starred as the lead role in Ernie’s Incredible Illucinations!” It seems Secker’s talents are endless, and we can’t wait to follow his next move in taking his vision global and inspiring businessmen, entrepreneurs and future traders everywhere.
