Plans unveiled to transform school
ST Augustine’s Academy in Maidstone is to undergo a multi- million pound transformation. Plans are about to be submit-
ted to the borough council which will see major improve- ments to facilities and the con- struction of a teaching block. The investment in the acad-
emy, in the former Astor of Hever buildings off Oakwood Road, will be a combination of new buildings and extensive re- furbishment to provide students with a modern, high-quality fa- cility, according to a spokesman for KCC. The proposed building would link with the newer part of the
A PROLIFIC burglar from Snod- land was caught after his DNA was found on a cigarette left at the scene of the crime. Michael Barnes (33), previ-
ously of Simpson Road, was jailed for three and a half years at Maidstone Crown Court, after admitting taking jewellery and electrical items valued at £15,000. The court heard he left a ciga-
rette end behind during the bur- glary in Brook Lane, Snodland, in January, but the homeowners were not smokers. Barnes had previously been convicted of two burglary of- fences. Under the three-strike rule, he was sentenced to three and a half years in jail. The rule sees criminals who have com- mitted three burglaries or rob- beries in the last 11 years handed a tough sentence. Investigating
Triathlon at lake LEYBOURNE Lake will be a venue for Maidstone Triathlon. The event, on Sunday, June 24, consists of a 400-metre swim at the lake, a 26km cycle ride around Maidstone, followed by a 5km run in Mote Park. The triathlon has been organ-
ised by Maidstone Town Centre Management, Maidstone and Tonbridge and Malling councils and sport challenge company Team Outrageous. Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research has been chosen as the official char- ity partner of the event.
school, built in 2005, to provide teaching facilities for science, music and drama.Akitchen and dining area will be included. A series of buildings that are
in a poor condition will be de- molished to make way for hard play areas and the west block is going to be refurbished to house computer technology. Representatives from the school, KCC, the Woodard Academies Trust and Willmott Dixon Construction have been meeting students and their par- ents to discuss the proposals. If the plans get the go-ahead,
work is due to commence on site in September.
Burglar trapped by cigarette end
officer, Det Con Adam Denny said: “The three strikes rule is designed to punish offenders who refuse to change their ways and who continue to plague our communities. “He broke this
into
home while the victims were away, stealing jew- ellery and electronics to a very high value. How- ever, the home-owners were not smokers so when the cigarette end was found at the scene we knew this would be a key piece of evidence. “It was the DNA match from
the cigarette which ultimately led to his undoing and his suc- cessful conviction.”
