Off site manufacture and

reduced risks and increased quality Steelwork WINNER BOURNE CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING

Bourne continues to apply market-leading and innovative approaches to solving logistical, programme, safety and quality challenges. In line with this, the steelwork contractor champions the use of bespoke off site manufacture, preassembly and use of innovative panelised systems. Off site manufacture and

installation of large components of structures has resulted in signifi cant programme gains, reduced project risks and an increase in quality. The contractor’s skills in this area involve integrating elements such as permanent structural design considerations with transient strength and robustness for handling, transportation and installation. It also prides itself on being able to design a structure to include architectural details, external and internal fi t-out and building services installation, where possible. where these aspects have been put into practice. The Crossrail station’s complex steel frame features a double curvature and spans 28 m. It was manufactured, fi tted

out and installed with an arrangement of high-grade zinc cladding, aluminium louvres and bespoke glazed panels. The canopy was manufactured in sections, stiff ened with Macalloy tension stays, transported into central London and installed over a live railway. The roof follows the curved

profi le of the platform, so each unit is unique. Use of off site construction solved the logistical and safety issues of how to construct a complex roof directly over fi ve active rail tracks and four platforms. The ticket hall building at

Farringdon will serve Network Rail, London Underground and Crossrail. Its roof comprises nine high-grade glazed roofl ights with louvred elevations. Each roofl ight is some 13 m long by 4 m wide by 4 m tall, redesigned by Bourne to enable off site manufacture and easier craneage on site. As a result, substantial

programme savings were achieved as the roof was fully complete and watertight in three weeks. This meant the build programme was nine weeks faster than a traditional approach. When working on a project,

the company claims to have two parallel objectives – fi rst, to deliver to the agreed schedule and cost, and second, to ensure that the project is completed without harming anyone. This has resulted in the company motto “Work Safe – Home Safe”. This ties in with Bourne’s skill base of engineers and off site fabricators as it chooses to design out risks by improving

designs or manufacturing at its workshop, installing complex elements in larger units. As a result of coordinated eff orts, Bourne was awarded the 365 Day Challenge award by Network Rail, for achieving a full year without accidents on site at Farringdon. The contractor’s accident rates

are consistently lower than industry averages, perhaps due to rolling out behavioural safety training for staff . These training workshops were based on video clips to provoke discussion and used visual illusions to demonstrate the diff erences in how people perceive the same information. The group provides a unique

brand of construction engineering expertise, providing an in-depth understanding of design and construction processes. This is supplemented by investment in a dedicated in-house research and development team to drive the company forward.
