Cantillon goes to great lengths to ensure the wellbeing of its valued workforce, making health and safety a company philosophy. Practical training and behavioural safety training is crucial to this ethos and is rolled out to all staff . This ensures that everyone takes responsibility for on-site safety, resulting in an extremely low accident incidence rate. Cantillon has had no RIDDOR

(reporting of injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences regulations)reportable accidents or a “dangerous occurrence” since 2006. Its approach to safety includes medical testing that goes beyond legislation. By examining operatives’ hearing, blood sugar, cholesterol, lung function and vision, the future health of the workforce is ensured. To make health and safety

has been adopted as the Cantillon safety motto. The motto declares that Cantillon will only work where safety is valued. In the past 12 to 18 months,

Cantillon has invested more than £19,000 in staff training programmes for both work- related activities and personal development – all of which include an emphasis on safety. All employees also receive

in-house training – whether offi ce or site based – to assure them that they have the right to stop work when they do not believe the system of working is correct. Company safety committee

meetings are held every four to six months, with a mix of offi ce-based employees and employee-appointed safety representatives for sites. Active monitoring is achieved

through a series of regular inspections against checklists. Site managers carry out weekly inspections, and all staff members are encouraged to come forward with their ideas and opinions towards health and safety.

FOCUS JOHN RIMMER

As one of the only demolition contractors to achieve more than a million working hours without a RIDDOR accident, Cantillon always puts health and safety first. Leading the company’s health

and safety success is its safety, health, environment and quality manager John Rimmer. Since joining the firm in 2007, he has actioned a number of new safety initiatives including a behavioural safety campaign, extensive training regime, a new management system and the introduction of “lifestyle medicals” for all team members. This commitment to improving

performance has been recognised externally with a number of awards including the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents Gold Award. The company was also one of the first demolition contractors to achieve the UKAS Environmental Certification ISO: 14001.
