JUDGES’ COMMENT
“An honest submission which hits all of the headings. Excellent references”
McGee Group is a 50–year-old contracting business which has, in more recent years, become specialised in concrete construction. The company prides itself on in-house expertise, executing the majority of work itself and providing a complete package for clients. This means a reduced reliance on subcontractors, which leads to greater control of safe working systems, construction programmes, lead times and budgets. Recently the company was
involved in building student accommodation for Newcastle University. Client INTO University Partnerships appointed Balfour Beatty as main contractor and McGee was subcontracted to carry out groundworks and build the substructure, superstructure and precast stairs. The £5 million contract was completed in 40 weeks. The development comprised

building as part of the contract. Envelope works for this building included the removal and remodelling of the roof structure and forming new openings in the new elevation, as well as repairs to brickwork and sash windows. Prior to any work commencing
on site, a risk assessment was carried out to highlight and eliminate possible risks and hazards. The risk assessments were then used to construct a detailed method statement, which was communicated to the workforce through a briefi ng. All relevant workforce members were required to sign a register to confi rm that the information received had been clearly understood. McGee Group aims to continue
the diversifi cation of both clients and services, expanding across the UK and abroad.
FOCUS CONOR HANLON AND KEVIN ALDEN
The key people involved with the £50 million new student accommodation for Newcastle University were part of main contractor Balfour Beatty and concrete subcontractor McGee’s
teams. They liaised with the design team early on, which yielded value-engineered solutions and assisted in improving and solving construction and programme issues. The teams also focused on safety and involved the entire site team to help plan all aspects of the work. This was supported by the presence of McGee and Balfour Beatty’s health and safety advisers. Balfour Beatty project director
Kevin Alden says: “Conor [Hanlon/ McGee project manager] and his team were professional, produced a good product safely and were flexible. They were also proactive towards safety and, in line with our zero-harm policy, were always looking at improving their already high safety standards. We look forward to working together on future contracts.”
