Specialists Awards 2012 Business Growth WINNER JLES GROUP
JUDGES’ COMMENT
“Identifying new key markets and diff erentiating itself from competitors through new services has kept this company ahead”
JLES is a company which provides technical advice and assistance to the construction industry on the adoption of infrastructure, such as roads, sewers and public open spaces. By implementing a range of new measures, it has achieved a signifi cant increase in its number of clients and net profi t. “Over a year ago, its client base
consisted mainly of housebuilders, which had become more and more reluctant to justify any speculative expenditure on dealing with infrastructure adoption. But through research and strategising, JLES created and implemented a growth plan to counter the trading conditions. Signifi cant investment was
made to increase the awareness of the problem of infrastructure adoption and create better market awareness of JLES, focusing this time on the social housing sector. closer working relationships with local authority highways departments and water companies, which resulted in JLE’s good reputation spreading further. Creating a new web-based client log-in facility to allow clients to obtain online updates of all the projects under JLE’s management helped diff erentiate the company from its competitors. The software provided information on the current status of a project and future projections and was a key feature in both sustaining and attracting new business.
FOCUS PAUL TOMLINSON
JLES Group group finance and operations manager Paul Tomlinson says: “Achieving growth in 2011 is one of JLES’ proudest achievements. Everyone in the JLES team can be credited with this accomplishment – from the founding director’s innovation and vision through to the site engineering teams’ commitment to implement and work in accordance with the company’s new strategy for growth. “We started off reviewing,
amending and marketing a revised version of our adoption management system – a document showing clients how we work. This was a high-risk decision and included JLES increasing the amount of speculative and non-chargeable work it undertook, removing a stage from our service that traditionally generated income. “This shift in the way we worked
enabled us to change the industry’s perception of the company from a consultancy and projects management firm to more of a value-added turnkey contractor.”
