The behavioural safety scheme
encourages operatives to think for each other during work activities and the possible eff ects on their
families and home life should they be involved in an accident
Training WINNER ERITH CONTRACTORS
Erith Group is taking training off site and out of the classroom with the pioneering use of a behavioural scheme that is designed to make safety second nature to the company’s 98 employees. Since the company’s inception
45 years ago, Erith Group has developed a reputation for its commitment to employee competence and on-the-job training. That commitment has remained constant during an 18-month period when the company’s demolition division has doubled in size, growing from 45 to 98 employees. Safety 24/7 is a site-based
behavioural safety training scheme devised by Erith’s own health and safety department as part of its OHSAS 18001:2007 accreditation. The scheme encourages employees to stop and think before they undertake a task both at work or at home and consider how an accident could aff ect both work and home life. Erith has invested heavily in its own in-house capabilities. Two of the company’s health and safety offi cers are now qualifi ed and accredited to deliver job-specifi c training to fellow employees. Regardless of whether training
is delivered in-house or by an accredited third party, Erith collects and collates feedback from all course participants. This feedback allows the company to improve the quality of the training provided and tailor it still further to the specifi c needs of its individual employees. The company has a database of
all employees’ training records which fl ags up refresher training requirements 60 days in advance of any certifi cate running out. Erith is also dedicated to
training apprentices and most recently provided work experience to 16-year-old Harry Ellis, who was struggling at school. Thanks to the support of the Erith team, he joined as a full-time apprentice after completing his GCSEs.
FOCUS STUART ACCLETON
“As with any form of educational initiative, the test of success is the ability of individuals to apply what they have learned,” says Erith Group associate director Stuart Accleton. “On that basis, Erith’s significant
investment in a dedicated training facility, trainer training and training courses has paid dividends: during the past year, the company has seen reportable accidents and incidents drop to zero and a 25 per cent fall in minor accident statistics. “Near-miss reports jumped by 400
per cent thanks to the increased awareness encouraged through the Safety 24-7 behavioural safety scheme. It is based around a three-hour presentation that encourages operatives to think for each other during work activities and the possible effects on their families and home life, should they be involved in an accident.”
