Building Envelope WINNER THE ALUMET GROUP
Alumet is a building envelope contractor which has achieved signifi cant commercial success in the past year by diversifying its operations to include more photovoltaic systems and expanding into diff erent markets. The company has developed
products in-house which are earning much commercial support. These include Avon Solar Control, a range of solar shading for windows and curtain walling, and BritSol, a range of mounting systems for solar panel arrays. Other specialist products
developed in-house include ABLE Façade System, a prefabricated glazed walling system capable of withstanding bomb blasts. The system was used on a £6m contract with the Ministry of Defence and received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category. Other recent projects include
the £3.5m St Bart’s School, Newbury, which featured 5,500m² of Schuco staggered glazing and

achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating. It also featured fi ve roof lights, each measuring approximately 16 m x 5 m. The company takes
sustainability seriously. It is monitoring and improving its own carbon footprint, and recently appointed a sustainability offi cer. Alumet has also been
instrumental in developing new apprenticeships for renewable technologies within the Warwickshire & Coventry region and invested more than £200,000 in staff training courses during the past year alone. The past year has also seen the
company’s profi t and turnover increase and see it enter the domestic PV market for the fi rst time. Over 80 per cent of Alumet’s work comes from repeat business and the company is growing in the area of building integrated photovoltaic solar panels. This is where the PV replaces the traditional façade of the building, instead of being secured above it.
FOCUS DEAN WALTON
Alumet sales director Dean Walton says: “We are able to design, manufacture and install the complete range of products required for external building envelopes, including solar photovoltaics. “The company has received
glowing testimonials for projects in markets including healthcare, education and commercial. Its health and safety standards have been recognised with numerous awards. “Stand-out projects in 2011
included Hendra Holiday Park – we installed 5,000 PV units on 4 ha of land in just five weeks, breaking the record for the fastest installation of its size in the UK. “Our business model has been
streamlined, allowing us to achieve increased turnover and profits as well as expand the workforce from 97 to 122 members of staff.”
