EcoHomes division to cut the cost of energy bills To help meet

the demand,

Illustrious Homes has set up a new division, EcoHomes, specialis- ing in new build and renovation projects to cut energy costs through using efficient materials, state of the art smart technology and innovative techniques. The new EcoHomes division aims to reduce the carbon footprint of all their projects allowing clients to

benefit from increased savings on energy costs. With a simple approach: consume less, by ensuring less energy is required to heat and light a property; and retain more heat within the property, Illustrious Homes can offer cost effec- tive energy saving building solutions. A recent property renovation by Illustrious Homes resulted in a reduction of emissions by over 70 per cent. t 0208 242 4366 www.illustrioushomes.co.uk

Europe’s first fire door inspection scheme The new Diploma in Fire Doors is an important step towards the launch of Europe’s first Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS), which is designed to transform people’s knowledge and understanding about the critical purpose and function of fire doors in buildings. It is a joint initiative developed by the BWF-Certifire Fire Door and Doorset Scheme and the Guild of Architectural Iron-mongers (GAI). The FDIS on-line learning

platform contains seven web-based education modules, which are designed to be studied at a candidate’s own pace and location. A final exam-ination can be taken at a local test centre, and successful candidates will be awarded the Diploma in Fire Doors.

IKO plc showcase their sustainable offering IKO Plc will be showcasing their range of sustainable roof engi- neering concepts,

including

green roof systems, photovoltaic energy roof systems and heat reflective membranes, at this years Ecobuild exhibition at ExCel in London, 20th - 22nd March. These products demon- strate IKO’s belief that roofs will not just be something consid-

ered to waterproof, but will be a valuable contribution to energy conservation and the environment. Render provides the sustainable finish to eco house A town on the fringes of Nottingham has become a showcase for the benefits of green living and energy conservation. As part of the Eco Houses Under Construction scheme, a new build house is one of several projects in West Bridgford which is demonstrat- ing its sustainable credentials following the application of breathable lime renders from Lime Technology. For the new build eco house, architect Mike Siebert of Ecological Homes Ltd specified Baumit MC55 and SEP02 renders. Offering ease of application, long term performance and flexibility the Baumit breathable renders proved the ideal solution and can reduce site times by a massive 75 per cent. Baumit MC55, a lime based solution from Lime Technology, was spray applied

to the external walls, before a top coat lime render finish of SEP02 in the ‘happy’ colour, gave the house a clean aesthetic look. The Baumit system is a lime-based traditional render which offers an economic and practical alternative to most other renders that are less vapour permeable.

Simplifying hygiene specification

“The Office for National Statistics’ latest data shows life expectancy in the UK has reached its highest level on record, with the number of centenarians alone increasing five-fold in 20 years. Disability is also on the increase: up by ½ million in less than a decade, with manual dexterity and continence particularly both showing an increase in prevalence. Today, one child in 20 under the age of 16 is disabled, and children with special and complex needs in mainstream schools has increased to almost 20 per cent,” says Robin Tuffley, Total Hygiene market- ing manager. “As a result, sales of disabled equipment in the UK have increased by 92.6 per cent over the last ten years; the total market size increased by 9.2 per cent last year. Simultaneously, new codes of practice on inclusive toileting have come into being, combining to emphasise the growing need for specifiers to know the type of equipment available, and where to obtain ‘best value’.” Total Hygiene’s Complete Bathroom Collection comprises the latest products to deliver a stylish room that enables the user to undertake personal ablutions with independence and dignity, or for his or her carer to assist with minimal input but optimum hygiene. Height adjustable washbasins, height adjustable baths, height adjustable shower seats, British-made, height adjustable and fixed Clos-o-Mat ‘wash and dry’ toilets, height adjustable changing tables, toilet lifters, hoists, and body driers comprise the Collection. The ‘one stop shop’ for products is enhanced by Total Hygiene’s 50 years’ experience in the sector, complemented by in-house advice, installation and maintenance.

Tesco shoppers stay safe and cool with SE Controls

An integrated smoke and natural ventilation solution from SE Controls is helping ensure that Tesco’s recently completed Walkden superstore in Manchester maintains a safe and comfortable environment for shoppers and staff. Constructed as part of the £80 million Ellesmere Centre retail develop- ment and designed by AEW Architects, the new store replaces an existing Tesco on the same site, but has been expanded to provide more than 168,000 sq ft of floor area, making it one of Europe’s largest Tesco Extra stores. Working to the smoke control strategy defined by consulting engineers Van Zyl & de Villiers, the store’s epansive glazed atrium was separated into three individual smoke and natural ventilation zones to not only provide the specified smoke extraction capacity, but also enable more accurate temperature control. In normal day-to-day ventilation mode, the natural ventilation system constantly monitors the temperature in each zone, on both the ground floor and mezza- nine level, with the average reading from separate sensors being used to signal the actuation of the atrium vents.
