Stormwater storage built into university The construction of a new hall of residence at The University of Exeter has incorporated an innovative and space saving, stormwater storage solution, using Hydro Stormbloc® within the foundation of the building. By designing a storage tank using Hydro’s Stormbloc® modular storage within the foundation structure, consultant engineers Airey & Coles enabled the redeveloped site to meet strict sustainable drainage requirements. In line with UPP’s sustainability goals for the development, the Stormbloc® was designed to mimic a natural storage pond feature as part of the building con- struction. 400m3 of storage was built for surface water runoff around the foundation piles beneath Block H of Birks Grange, utilising the only free space available as part of a challenging redevelopment.

Skelair helps Van Elle keep projects ‘on track’ Skelair International, a leading supplier of ground engineering and rock drilling equipment, has delivered a new Klemm 708-2 rig – the first to arrive in the UK – to Van Elle, the UK’s largest independent geotechnical, piling, foundation and ground stabilisation contractor. Factory finished in Van Elle’s corporate bran-ding, the Klemm 708-2 was delivered in advance of the Christmas break, enabling the contractor to deploy the

new rig ready for planned piling works on the Gateway Project at Birmingham New Street, where the Christmas shutdown called for all piling works to be installed under a very critical program. This latest investment in drilling equipment takes the Van Elle Klemm fleet to eight rigs, with the 708-2 procured specifically to meet the requirements of restricted access and minimal headroom piling appli- cations. With the capability to install both deep 450mm diameter and 600mm diameter piles below 3.5m headroom, the Klemm 708-2 will primarily be deployed on Network Rail projects where there is a fall zone limit adjacent to the rail.
