External Fixtures Freedor just got even better
Fireco has announced some important improvements to award winning Freedor, the world’s first wireless, electrically powered free-swing door closer. Access has been made smoother by adding an automatic free-swing function, weekly self-test disrup- tion and noise has been reduced by making the weekly test selec- table rather than a default func- tion; and the battery life has been extended from 12-18 months to 18-24 months. The component
count has been reduced and redundant consumable parts have been removed from the package. The battery lift has also been improved making it an easier transition to activation and the screw elements have been improved. The envi- ronmental performance has also been enhanced.
AJ award winning project uses Tectus Architect Jack Woolley’s almost invisible live / work scheme on the site of a former carpen- ters workshop won this year’s Architects Journal Small Projects Award, against strong competition from 24 short listed practices. Described by the judges as “delightful” and a superb use of a found site, the office & home project featured a “hidden” door built into the brickwork of an existing wall. Architectural iron-mongers Poole Waite & Co Ltd recom- mended the door should be fitted with satin finish Tectus TE 640-3D hinges, from door hardware manufacturer Simonswerk, as this “fully concealed” hinge, itself an award winner, was by definition and specification the perfect partner for the project, a worthy recipient of the prestigious AJ Small Projects prize.
Improved care for the elderly in Cardiff When it was decided that 1960s built Woodcroft Care Home in Trowbridge, Cardiff, needed to be modernised and made more economically viable, archi- tects agreed that it would be better to design a new build than undertake a refurbishment. Planning permission was granted in 2009 and the following year saw the old building demolished and contractors on site commencing the building work. Only 18 months
later, in January 2012, Hafod Care Association opened the new Woodcroft Care Home, a state-of-the-art spacious building that provided greater levels of comfort for residents, as well as improved energy efficiency thanks partly to Spectus Window Systems’ Elite 70 PVC-U window system. Spectus’ Elite 70 PVC-U system provided the ideal window profile for the care home due to its ease of maintenance and replacement, as well as its exceptional value. In total, 175 white PVC-U windows were installed.

DAAB MK drive unit operators have been used to automate a set of ten side- hung, bi-folding doors at the new Edinburgh Trams maintenance depot. DAAB is part of the FAAC group and its operators were specified by Jewers Doors who were contracted to supply and install the tram depot doors, measuring 4m wide by 7.2m high. All DAAB operators come with a five year warranty and can be used to automate gates, doors and barriers. Director of the Phoenix Division of Jewers Doors, Mark Jewers said: “DAAB operators are extremely durable and can be opened manually in just two seconds in the event of power failure or fire.” To maximise safety, FAAC infrared safety beams were fitted to all doors, which trigger the door to stop and reverse if an obstacle breaks the beam. Full height safety edges were directly wired into the DAAB EP103 control board, preventing the door from closing on a person or a vehicle if the safety edge is depressed.
