37th Annual Luxton Pro C Rodeo

By Darci Friesen

Twelve miles from downtown Victoria, Langford BC is home to the Annual Luxton Professional Rodeo. Held the weekend of May 22nd – 24th, this fully sanctioned rodeo has renowned competitors participating each day in all seven major events. With an action packed rodeo - with special perfomances throughout – and the Westcoast Amusement midway running the duration of the weekend, there’s sure to be constant excitement both in and outside of the arena. Some rodeos offer drill teams,

others trick riders. Te Luxton Rodeo? It offers the thrill that cowboys/cowgirls bring – as well as the combined comedy of man and dogs. Bert Davis, aka ‘the

owboys, Clowns and Comedic Canines

Coppertown Clown’ has been in the business of distraction, dogs and delight for 38 years, his first experience at a mere 16 years of age. Known in the circuit as “the clown with the dogs”, Bert and his 13 (currently) pooches put on their shows across the continent: in 43 states, five provinces, and even once in Australia. As well as performing three to four times each rodeo, each day alongside of his cuddly colleagues, Bert also works as the Barrel Clown – jumping to cowboys’ rescue when a diversion from an upset animal is needed. With a myriad of experiences,

awards and accomplishments under his oversized-clown-belt, the Coppertown Clown and his canines have participated in such events as “America’s got Talent”, CMT`s `Most

Shocking: Stomped and Gored`, and have been nominated for awards such as the Canadian Professional Rodeo Associations `Comedy Act of the Year`, and `Dress Act of the Year`. With each show lasting anywhere

from eight to ten minutes, they consist of three specialty dog acts – sometimes including the ones known as Te Muttley Crew, Balloon Bobo, and the Garbage Mans Nightmare. As a special treat, at the end of the Ladies Barrel Racing events, the dogs perform one of their newer acts. Without accompaniment, these fantastically trained four-leggers run the barrels – mimicking the ladies that were on before them. For more information on the
