elcome to Spring! I have been walking in my backyard every morning, sipping my coffee

and waiting for the first signs to show up. Well, at last, they are here! There are hints of purple and pink peaking out of the iris beds. The climbing rose on the side of the house is covered with buds just

waiting to explode and fill the air with the most glorious aroma. And, best of all, my blackberries and marionberries are covered with little buds all along the fence. We go to press this afternoon, I get some sleep tonight and tomorrow, and then it’s off to one of our local nurseries to pick up my tomatoes and some perennials to spread out here and there. The ground has been cleared of weeds and is almost

ready for planting, just a little adjustment to the soil and then in go all the new plants.. The hardest part is actually deciding where to get them. I found some really nice cherry and apricot trees out at

West Side Nursery, already espaliered, so they could go against the back fence, along with the fig and lemon that I got there two years ago. Then, there are all the clubs and organizations with their annual fundraising plant sales. Over the years I have stopped in here and there and so, I now have favorite “not to be missed” events. For color, I go to The Gilroy Rotary Club sale on April

7, out at Syngenta Flowers on Hecker Pass. You know the fields of flowers you pass just shortly after leaving Gilroy, before the wineries start? You might know it as Goldsmith’s, but it has been Syngenta Flowers for a while now. You have to get there really early as it seems all of Gilroy is there by 9am. South Valley Fleurs Garden Club has their sale on April 21 at the Booksmart parking lot in Morgan Hill. This is the one I look to for my vegetables and herbs. The Morgan Hill Flower Lover’s sale on April 28 and 29 at the community center is a little different. They also have a tea room and a white elephant sale, and, an antiques appriaser. So I will need to save a little room in the garden for a few of their plants as well. Now all I need is the time to get out there and plant

them! Hurray for Spring, my favorite time of year. Sylvia Wallace Myrvold
