GROWING WISER Ignore the Economy, Make It Work!

by Dorie U. Sugay

as is almost $5 a gallon in our area. People want to buy fuel efficient cars, but are afraid to take on car

payments or they can’t qualify because their credit scores took a hit when they were laid off. Things are not so easy these days. We can choose to let these challenges “make us old” or we can “grow wiser” and find ways to make it work. “There’s no- where else to go but up.” Remember what I keep saying: “it is

not what happens to you, but how you choose to react to it that dictates how you live.” So how can we help each other? We can be kind to each other; do something for each other. Take the time to help a mother whose hands are full with kids and trying to throw her grocery bags in the back of her car. You can just smile at that one lady who seems to be carrying the world on her shoulders. Sometimes I have fun and pay the toll for the car behind me and hope they “pay it forward.” The other day, I was feeling so good I bought a small orchid plant to give to Dianna at Nob Hill, Gilroy, who makes the best sandwiches. She prepares them with such joy; I swear it tastes better. Little things can help. Kindness does

not save you money, I know. A smile feels good but it does not stretch the dollar. Here are some ideas… Avoid wasting money on prescriptions.

When you’re given a new prescription, ask the Doc for samples. There is nothing worse than spending $45 for antibiotics, breaking out and having to buy another prescription. Doctors get samples but for- get to give them away. Ask! The Low Income Home Energy

Assistance Program helps pay heating/electricity costs of low-income and seniors. Whether you rent or own, you can enroll. You don’t need to be receiving

other government assistance. Each state’s program is different, for more info, go to and click on “Energy Assistance.” Visit

promotions for coupons to get discounted Ensure nutritional drink. Sometimes it’s just getting something free for a change that’s fun and makes you smile. Why not? Before you go to the gas station, visit, enter your zip code and find the cheapest gas in town. (They have a mobile application by the way). Naturemade Vitamins has a Wellness

Rewards program that allows you to gain points when you buy their products and use these points for coupons, for vitamins, exercise DVDs and more. Go to and go to “Wellness Rewards.” Also, visit their “Coupon Center.” Trade services. My neighbor uses my

garbage and recycling bins and he plows down the weeds off the side of my pas- ture. I get discounts from a boutique in town owned by a friend, for “modeling” her clothes and sending people her way. Keep those creative juices flowing!
