n these days of 24-hour connection it is increasingly important for businesses to be able to carry out their work quickly and efficiently no matter where they are in the country.
And broadband provision and speeds play a huge role in
this – as does finding wi-fi hot-spots where you can work remotely. BT is currently in the middle of a £2.5bn UK-wide roll-
out of high speed broadband – and this year it is the turn of south east Wales. The firm’s Openreach arm provides the infrastructure of
exchanges and cabling which can be used by most providers. Currently only Chepstow, Caerphilly and Hengoed have
fibre broadband in the south east Wales area but 2012 will see it going live in another ten exchange areas which will include Abergavenny, Blackwood, Caerleon, Caldicot, Castleton, Maesglas, Newbridge, Newport Chartist (Bettws/Malpas area), Newport and Pontypool. This will take high speed fibre broadband to more than
100,000 households and businesses across the area. This technology involves running fibre cables from the
exchange to the ‘cabinet’ in the street , following a recent announcement from BT, speeds up to 80mb per second from next month. The slower the speeds, the fewer things you are able to
do via broadband. With the slowest speeds you maybe able to view websites and send e-mails but with the fastest you can view films, play games, watch HD television and much more on multiple computers at the same time. Ann Beynon, BT’s director for Wales, said: “It is rapidly

getting to the stage where high speed broadband is a must- have commodity in the real world. It will be invaluable for people running rural businesses relying on the internet. They will be able to do things in real time including video conferencing and watching videos or television programmes online.” The Welsh Government has been
undertaking a procurement exercise which will result in the next generation of broadband being available just about everywhere in Wales. The
announcement of who will be awarded that contract is due soon. That will give virtually all people in Wales the opportunity to be part of the digital world. It will be transformational in terms of how we work, live and play. The Welsh Government wants it all to happen as quickly as possible and to be complete by the end of 2015. On top of the roll out of high speed broadband, BT also has more than
