represents a remarkably complete example of 19th century industrial landscape and illustrates the social and economic structure of that time. Pontypool is also one of the oldest industrial towns in
Wales. It grew up due to the abundance of raw material for making iron. Pontypool also played a lead role in the production of Japanware (a process for applying high coloured enamels to iron). Pontypool Japanware became popular all over the world especially in America. Factories were set up in other parts of the country but Japanware made at Pontypool was considered to be the best. With the decline of these industries the economy of
Torfaen became based upon large scale manufacturing for predominantly the automotive industry but this has declined due to the competition faced predominantly from Eastern Europe. The economy is now based upon the service sector,
niche manufacturing companies and fi nancial services. However the knowledge-based economy and research and development are playing a larger role within the economy of Torfaen.
