KyminA A A Purnells

Parker & Co

Yes. We, at Kymin Financial Services, prefer to offer work experience to young people, leading to permanent employment to those who are interested in our business and who prove to be satisfactory candidates for a full time position.

The best way to get young and old alike into work is undoubtedly to get the economy going and create some jobs! Apprenticeships are ok but there are not many of those around even in a bouyant economy. Despite all the bad press work experience has had I do believe that its a great way for young people to develop a work ethic, get some experience and have something to offer future potential employers.

We intend to make sure that it is good for business. We are organising a special sales drive, which will be associated with a charitable donation for each piece of business placed with us during a period leading up to, and after, the actual Jubilee date. We anticipate that this will be good for business, raise our profi le, raise money for the charity and be a suitable way of celebrating Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee.

Put simply it can’t be good for UK business to fund a day without income, especially in this economy. However, that is not what this bank holiday is about. Personally I think we should be proud of our Queen and our heritage and celebrate what we have. The days of street parties are gone but will enjoy the day off with my family and just forget the cost to my business.

I believe that the way to get young people into work is providing a good education in the fi rst place. Schools should provide more vocational training, for example, book-keeping, which would provide a good base for them in obtaining employment. I also believe further education and obtaining qualifi cations is the key. Too many people are doing degrees which are unlikely to lead to a career.

The extra bank holiday for the Diamond Jubilee is of course, good for employees – they get an extra day off – but not so good for employers. Employers will not be reimbursed for the losses made that day and will have to ‘shoulder’ that cost. Purnells will be providing the extra bank holiday day to all of the staff members. I believe we should support Britain and a day of celebration can only be a good thing for the county and is an excellent advertisement to the rest of the world. Being an Insolvency Practitioner and based in Newport, however, I cannot see there being a direct benefi t to the fi rm.

Rodney Parade

A

Rodney Parade runs a season-long internship project and to date 50 per cent of the participants have gone on to join the company full time. With roles in the communications department working with the professional rugby side, there is a great deal of tacit knowledge required and getting the right personality can be as important as qualifi cations. The internship offers candidates an opportunity to sell their skills and abilities to the company and put themselves in a prime position as and when paid positions open up.

It tends to be all about timing. Last year’s Royal Wedding enabled the Dragons to host a postponed game in front a sell-out crowd and as this year’s extra bank holiday falls in June, it is during the holiday period for our players and many of our staff. As we are in the business of live sport, if it fell on a match-week in the middle of our season we would struggle to accommodate it.

2012 sees the launch of our initiative entitled ‘Kymin in the Community’. Currently, the details are still under wraps but this will focus on the charitable and community initiatives that Kymin will be supporting, going forward.

I don’t think there is anything positive to say!

I must admit, I did laugh throughout this programme. Newport town has defi nitely changed since I last went there (approximately 10 years ago – or more!). I think that the programme could have been fi lmed in any major town or city in the UK and the outcome would have been the same.

It concentrated on the

drunk people, the fi ghts, the arguments, etc, etc. It did not show the other side of the coin – people laughing and generally having a good time. Programmes like this are edited in such a way so to make them entertaining. I think we should take it with a pinch of salt!

The adage that any news is good news only works if you get enough coverage to balance out the negative. Newport needs to raise the profi le of the city by championing its many positives. Using our networks and channels of communication to get positive messages out about where our businesses operate can only be a good thing.
