between business and community. Indeed, they could be seen as one and the same; community success is good for local business; business success should be good for the community.
Doing it for charity
Newport solicitors HardingEvans has always been actively involved in raising money for charity, as it believes in giving back to the community it has been part of for more than 100 years. It chooses a charity each year and this year it’s charity is Sport Relief. HardingEvans is staging a Shirt for Hurt campaign to challenge staff and business contacts to raise money by being sponsored for wearing the shirt of a sports team that would really HURT for them to wear! A spokesman said: “What made this of interest for us is it is a bit of fun for the staff and our contacts, but also we are able to tie in some of our clients like Sam Warburton to help us raise the profi le of what we are trying to achieve for charity.”
Acorn 20-20-20 – serving up 20 years of community support
Supporting the community it serves has always been key to the day-to-day business activity at Acorn – and this year, in particular, will be no exception. Founded in 1992, the leading UK multi-
regional recruitment and training company which has its headquarters in Newport, has been closely involved with community schemes and charitable organisations – both large and small. And over the next 12 months, Acorn and
its 272 staff will be commemorating its 20th birthday by targeting a special £20,000 worth of fundraising to help 20 different charities! Over the years, the company, founded by
Newport-born Matt Southall, has supported The Prince’s Trust, NSPCC Cymru, the Help a South Wales Child charity, as well as many, many other smaller community-centred and charitable initiatives across Wales and throughout the UK. Acorn’s managing director, Matt Southall said:
“As a business we have always considered that the communities we live and work within deserve our support, and our staff have proved to be more than willing to get involved in providing just that.
“But what we have also found is that the
business itself has benefi ted from helping others. Our staff use some of their charity activities in team-building and as personal development opportunities. “In fact having their efforts redirected
periodically to concentrate on fundraising and community support often encourages a fresh outlook on daily operations and customer service activities. “This year is a special year for the Acorn
Group, as we celebrate our 20th birthday – and what better way to mark the occasion than to share it with the people in the communities where we work. The 20-20-20 campaign helps to demonstrate precisely the type of relationship we have with local people and organisations up and down the country, and our staff are delighted to be further engaged in this way.”
Helping the community
for charity Tillery Valley, Abertillery, provides prepared chilled and frozen meals. It has a comprehensive CSR programme which includes: a partnership with food distribution charity Fareshare; sponsorship of Abertillery Rugby Club; and support for St Johns Ambulance and the Princes Trust. All 350 staff have been involved, with the best example being waste reduction which has seen total waste reduced by 25 per cent and driving recycling from 15 per cent to 80 per cent in a two year period.
