Torfaen has traditionally been the home of heavy manufacturing. However, these days a diverse range of sectors are well represented. The borough has also been successful


in attracting inward investment resulting in a number of organisations relocating to the area. New business enterprise is an active, growing sector in the borough with survival rates being some of the strongest in Wales. Key industries in Torfaen today include:


food industry, automotive, construction, engineering and technology, research and development, transport, logistics and distribution, business services and fi nance. One of the business support team’s


most successful ventures has been the establishment of the prestigious Technium

Springboard at Llantarnam Park in Cwmbran. Since it opened in 2006, 38 companies


have graduated with more than 70 per cent remaining within south east Wales. It is a joint venture between Torfaen County Borough Council, and The Welsh Government. The project has been supported by European Union Objective One fund. Key developments at the site include science, research and technology. Technium Springboard supports the creation and growth of science and technology businesses and offers a soft-landing for international companies establishing a foothold in the national market. Today the county is transforming its


economy and community by leading the way in the digital revolution. At the heart of this transformation is a new shared resource centre in the


northernmost town of Blaenavon. This provides a unique public sector digital storage facility serving Torfaen and Monmouthshire councils, local health services and Gwent Police. The SRS will provide the engine for driving the transformation of the entire valley as a single integrated digital system.


What was historical industry in the area and how did that fi t into the history of Wales?


The industrial heritage of Torfaen was predominantly based upon the heavy industries of steel and coal production and played a key role in the Industrial Revolution. In 2000 Blaenavon landscape was


inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and recognised for its Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) as the area
