Would you know where to Source an Ex-Racehorse?
Source an Ex-Racehorse, a website dedicated to rehoming ex-racehorses, is racing ahead in 2012, building on the website’s continuous growth since its inception.
“As the only website dedicated to finding homes for ex- racehorses, we’re working to develop ways to promote the horses that are available. We are also promoting specific shows and events that have classes for ex-racehorses, or that will be of interest to ex-racehorse owners,” says Rowena Cook from Source an Ex-Racehorse. “We’re developing our help section to provide further information to people who own ex-racehorses, or those who are really interested in these superb animals.”
The website comprises adverts featuring ex-racehorses that are looking for new homes whether for sale or for loan. The horses on the site can be fresh out of training or those who have been in a private homes pre sale. Some horses on the site may not have raced (i.e., they may have been in training but never raised) or may have raced outside the UK, meaning they are non-eligible for RoR classes, however, this information is requested by the site at the time the advert is placed.
“The site is really easy to navigate,” says Rowena. “Visitors can narrow the selection of horses available by price,
Enduring Success
By Sue Frusher 2011 was the twenty-third year of riding with various endurance societies for me and my fabulous horse, Ben. We have enjoyed many successes throughout that time.
At our
recent North and East Yorkshire Group Awards night Ben was first in two trophies and he also got a special rosette for his lifetime distance which is now at nine thousand, seven hundred and fifty kilometres.
That was a wonderful finish to a really good year, with some more unique markers to complete it. First, it was twenty- five years since I got Ben on
the 2nd December, 1986 so we achieved the Silver Anniversary of our partnership. Then I rode him on Christmas Day for the first time ever and fulfilled that small ambition of a quarter of a century. Last but not least came Ben’s thirtieth birthday. He’s had his annual veterinary checkup for teeth, eyes, legs and heart, we’ve walked miles with him in hand every week and we’ve been doing his neck, leg and tail exercises every day for years now. So, fingers and hooves crossed, we’re set to do a few more days away, riding and helping and hoping for a pleasantly uneventful 2012!
whether they have come from a trainer or not, and whether the horse is for loan. In each area we provide as much information as we can about the horse including images, background and even links to video clips if these are available.”
Source an Ex-Racehorse is managed by the same people who run Equine Management and Training, a business dedicated to re educating ex- racehorses and helping them have prosperous lives post racing.
“We are dedicated to the care and well-being of horses in general,” says Rowena, “we know that some ex-racehorses have a bad name, but there are so many excellent examples out there. With the right training and the right ownership, these horses can really flourish.”

Lancs horse company cleans up two years on the trot!
A Great Eccleston business woman’s horse-care company has won a major trade award for the second year in succession. Hannah Wild of Supplement Solutions took first prize in the 2012 British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) Business Awards after also scooping the accolade last year.
It is the first time that anybody has won two years on the trot in the association’s 30-year history. The announcement was made on Sunday 19th February at a glittering awards ceremony hosted by BETA at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham.
Stepping forward to receive the winner’s cup for the Mail Order and Internet Company Of The Year accolade was Hannah Wild who founded Supplement Solutions seven years ago. Recognised as the Oscars of the horse industry, the BETA awards are based on more than 4000 votes cast by the public for their favourite firms. But there are more hurdles to clear for companies getting onto the awards short list, for judges also carry out a range of other investigations, including “secret shopper” tests.
Hannah, who is a keen rider and teacher, runs her business via a national website -
www.
supplementsolutions.
co.uk - which lists over
5000 nutritional supplements to aid horse health. At the end of last year, Hannah’s company relocated to Great Eccleston from nearby Scorton, moving into premises ten times bigger near the centre of the village.
Members of the Supplement Solutions team based at the new offices accompanied Hannah and her husband Henry to the awards ceremony. “The great thing was that our staff were able to hear the judges describing the company as offering a service second-to-none, thanks to their dedication and knowledge,” said Hannah.
“This award couldn’t have come at a better time as we are now fully geared up for the new riding season and are seeing an almost daily increase in customers from the UK and overseas. We will now benefit from the national and international publicity that this honour brings and, even better, I won’t have to hand back the trophy I came home with last year!” she added.
