Denise Mitchell & Gamblethorpe Hanoverians Photos supplied. BYRDS & Manor Grange photos by Kevin Sparrow

We asked Denise to tell us about her horses and her recent wins at Northallerton – “We specialise in imported German Hanoverians and have been going to Germany since 1997. We only buy colt foals directly from the breeders or from the Elite Auctions in Verden. We then either sell them as soon as they arrive or grow them on in the 72 acres of excellent grassland we have.

in October 2011. Phoebe has only recently turned 15 but has already done really well with Sambucca (Smudge to his friends) who is her first horse. She has been out competing three times and has won or been placed every time out, at Northallerton recently she broke the 70% barrier in the Novice Open.

Ryan Todd has been riding Remi since last April for me; he is a 5 year old, rising 6 (in June) Hanoverian stallion (licensed with the British Warmblood Society) by Royal Blend out of a Sandro Hit/De Niro mare. His dam Shakira is a full sister to the stallions, St Moritz I and St Moritz II. Last year they were very successful in the Young

Horse Classes culminating in a 5th at Hartpury in the Five Year Old Championship and a 3rd at Hickstead in the International Five Year Old Final! This year they have been out at Elementary and Medium level and have done extremely well winning or being second every time out. At Northallerton recently, Ryan won both the Elementary Open and the Medium Open whilst Phoebe won the Novice Open. Ryan has just turned 19 and is on an Apprenticeship with the Moody sisters and also trains with David Hunt. Ryan and Remi are currently on the Elite BYRDS training squad.”
