The second weekend in May (12th and 13th) is the traditional date for the Newark & Nottinghamshire County Show and, with equestrian entries closing on Friday 23rd March, exhibitors need to get theirs in soon.

New classes for ponies this year include the British Show Pony Society (BSPS) Mountain and Moorland Heritage Working Hunter Pony classes. In addition, Lead Rein and First Ridden are being introduced to the Coloured Horse and Pony Society (CHAPS) affiliated classes. These will be open to traditional, native and non-native coloured ponies.

Heavy Horse aficionados will enjoy the in-hand classes on Sunday which cater for Shires, Clydesdales, Percherons and Suffolk Punches while the Heavy Horse Turnouts of both agricultural and trade vehicles always attracts interest. Working horses will also be found near to the Forestry area where displays of pre- mechanised haymaking will take place throughout the weekend.

Entries for show jumping close on Friday 20th April and only at Newark can you find a ring dedicated solely to the sport. The ring is maintained throughout the year to produce perfect going whatever the conditions and courses are built by the highly respected British Show Jumping accredited David Cole. The Mattie Brown Stakes is the feature class of the show, won last year by John Whitaker riding Argento. John also won the class in 2010 riding Uniek, so will it be a hat-trick this time?

Schedules are available either by post from the Competitions & Entries Secretary, Newark & Nottinghamshire Agricultural Society, Newark Showground, Lincoln Road, Newark-on-Trent NG24 2NY (please enclose an A5 addressed envelope with 75p postage) or downloaded from the website: www.newarkshowground. com. Entries can also be made online or by post.
