Sarah with Paul’s top horse

Hello!

My name is Sarah Mousley, I’m 19 soon to be 20 and I am currently competing in British Showjumping up to 1.20m level and I have just set up my own competition yard.

Over the last 5 years I have been lucky enough to get experience working and riding for; Paul Barker, Geoff Billington, Cian O’Connor and William Whitaker. With everybody running their yards differently, I’ve taken the best bits and used them in setting up my own yard and this will be the way I run my yard. For example, Paul taught me the importance to win and setting realistic goals, the best way of doing this is to pick shows that suit me and my horses. Cian taught me how important it is to treat every horse as an athlete, keeping up-to-date with supplements, physio’ and fitness. If your horse feels well then he will perform well. William has made me realise how I put too much pressure on myself to do well and at the end of the day I should enjoy what I do because I love my job! Tomorrow is another day! I’ve been riding for about ten years but showjumping properly for the last 5 years. My yard is based between Richmond and Northallerton in Yorkshire. About ten minutes from the A1. I’m offering competition, full, assisted

I hope you are all having a fantastic start to 2012!

and rehabilitation livery. My aim is to get horses for me to improve them and compete and if the client wants for the horse to be sold.

During the next month I am hoping to compete every weekend with the horses; Wildcat, Zorkin and Temple Marple, at Richmond Equestrian Centre, Rowallan Activity Centre and Arena UK.

Wildcat is my top horse, Hippo is her stable name. She loves her food! She is a 9-year-old chestnut mare and my aim for her is to qualify the HOYS amateur final. I came 6th in the qualifier last year so I really am determined to do it this time! I’ve had her 3 years now and she wins a lot of classes; she’s very quick and very careful. Then I have Zorkin, Zeke in the stable. I have him in from a client to sell and he is a really lovely straight, 8-year-old gelding. He has got all his Newcomer double-clears so I’m aiming him at getting his Foxhunter double-clears and the Newcomers second rounds. Temple Marple, or Rita in the stable, is my youngest horse and I have her from Paul Barker to bring her up through the lower classes, Discovery and Newcomers. Then when she’s ready to go for the big stuff, Paul will have her back. I started off training with Paul

when he started going out with my sister and then when I wasn’t at school I groomed at shows for him and that led to me being his rider when I came back from Cian’s. I worked freelance as a groom for Geoff at Hartpury Show and I get on well with him as he was best man at Paul and Hannah’s wedding. I met Cian when I was training with Conor Swail and then when things went quiet at home, I rang Cian and he offered me a job as a groom which was an amazing experience; I got to go to Spain for the Spanish sunshine tour and I learnt loads from him! I am freelancing at the moment as a groom. William, I’ve done quite a few shows for him now and take my horse down with me some weekends for his help. My family is not horsey at all really. My sister started the whole thing off and I just followed her! She trained with Tony Newbury and Peter Murphy and then met Paul and is now married and they are expecting their first baby.

Richmond is my local show centre just ten minutes down the road; it is a brilliant spot and the people who run it, Mike and Sue Foster, could not be more helpful, they work so hard so we go as often as possible and it’s brilliant to keep the horses ticking over! Rowallan again is a fantastic place

in Scotland, Glasgow. The indoor arena is the biggest I have ever seen and the ground is always perfect. Lord and Lady Rowallan are always really friendly and will do anything to help us. We go there quite often.

I look forward to the rest of the year with Equestrian Life Magazine and wish you all the best of luck for next month!
