PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
By GHBA President WILL HOLDER, Trendmaker Homes
"Tere is no more effective or more
affordable industry specific education for developing your and your employees’ industry specific skills than those offered at the GHBA. All of us owe it to ourselves to take a close look at the professional designations
available....GHBA is one of the few local associations offering the entire designation course lineup in one location.
Written by Theodore Roosevelt, the message reads, “Every man owes a part of his time and money to the business industry in which he is engaged. No man has a moral right to withhold his support from an organization that is striving to improve conditions within his sphere.”
Is that "enough said?" Does it fully explain why we are members of the association? Because if you need more, there really are a lot of reasons as to why we are members of the GHBA.
At the first board meeting of 2012, Toy Wood, CEO of the GHBA, asked all board members to collectively read out loud the association’s mission statement. While I have been on the board for many years, I am not sure I have ever read or seen that mission statement. The mission is: “to provide advocacy, education and meaningful services to benefit its members and the housing industry.”
While it did feel a little awkward all of us reading out loud, it was an effective way to be sure everyone had actually read the mission. I found the statement to be clear and simple, and I found it to be accurate based on my observations made over many years of watching the association go about its business.
The statement leads with advocacy, and for good reason. Our industry needs continuous and strong advocacy at the local, state and federal level. We get representation from GHBA, TAB and NAHB, at all three levels already inside our local dues. We are but one voice, but there are many varied voices that work against the aims and interest of our industry. If we do not

have a strong voice as an association, then we have no protection from the proposed laws and regulations that will drive our industry to a grinding halt.
Next up is education. There is no more effective or more affordable industry specific education for developing yours and your employees’ industry specific skills than those offered at the GHBA. All of us owe it to ourselves to take a close look at the professional designations available to each of us today within GHBA. Be you a builder, remodeler, sales professional, superintendent, marketing person, or green home specialist, you develop yourself and your people right now with job specific training. GHBA is one of the few local associations offering the entire designation course lineup in one location.
The list of other meaningful services offered by the association is too long for me to describe properly in this article, but it goes far beyond networking. Not to discount the values of networking. I learn more from my competitor friends at GHBA than I can walking my own subdivisions.
There is a giant list of discounts available to all GHBA members ranging from health insurance programs to 401(k) management services to discounted wireless services and various simple discounts offered through the association. We should all take the time to see what we can use in our companies. Who knows what we might find; we might even save enough to make our membership free.
GHBA has a fantastic staff just waiting to serve you. Learn what’s out there and take advantage of it all!
