the designation since its debut in 2002. The CAPS program began from Bawden’s initial conversations with AARP about the need for seniors to find reputable contractors. He has spearheaded the program, helping to develop the content for both CAPS courses as well as Universal Design/Build, a new course launched by NAHB. Bawden, the first chairman for the CAPS Board of Governors, also has been one of the most popular CAPS instructors for the past decade. He holds NAHB’s CAPS, Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR), Certified Green Professional (CGP) and Graduate Master Builder (GMB) designations.
“Dan has taught hundreds of students at his home builders association and across Texas, and, as a result, the state has among the highest number of CAPS graduates,” said Mike Davis, CAPS, CGP, CGR, chairman of the CAPS Board of Governors and a remodeler based in Redmond, Ore. “CAPS classes attract builders, architects, remodelers, designers, health care professionals and others in the aging field, and Dan does everything possible to ensure his instruction is inclusive for all groups.”
“The overwhelming success of the CAPS program can be attributed to people like Dan,” said Michael Copp, Hon MIRM, senior vice president for NAHB Education. “He has consistently been one of CAPS’ biggest cheerleaders and is dedicated to teaching builders, remodelers and others in the industry about the value of creating homes that meet everyone’s current and future needs.”
