FEBRUARY 2012 THE RIDER /53 Dominican Dog Rescue
By Dee Morrison Lynden Animal Clinic It all started with a vacation to the Dominican Republic.
Before returning to work after a long absence. I knew going that I might want to bring a home a stray dog. I’ve heard all the stories of dogs wandering around the Island homeless and in desperate need. Violet and baby were those dogs, yes, I know I said dog now it became dogs. I contacted Judy at Friends of the Animals about the beach dogs at our Dominican hotel in April 2011.
She came out and helped me catch two females and 5 puppies on a Sunday afternoon, on Mon- day I was at the groups clinic helping a DVM from the East Coast of Canada spay the two older puppies. One female wasn’t ready to be spayed and Violet was nursing her three puppies. I promised Violet that I would be back for her and her pups. Two of the puppies died before arrangements could be made to bring them home to Ontario.

Lynden Animal Clinic in Lynden Ontario are now joining my exploits in Dominican Repub- lic.
and children would be appreciated. Monetary donations are always welcome. These can be made directly through their website at www.aaasosua.com
or sent to Lyn- den Animal Clinic - email@example.com
On March 22 to 29th, Brent Babcock DVM, his wife Robin, Helma a veterinary technician, Shirley and Sandy who are friends of the clinic will join me in the Dominican.
We were fortunate to find wonderful homes for Violet and her puppy Oliv- er in Ontario. My goal now was to go back and bring more home for adoption. In October a fellow tech and I went back to work with the group in Sosua spaying and neutering dogs belonging to people in the area. This time I was fortunate enough to work with DVM Nicola Schmidt from Ger- many.
Arrangements were made to bring home 7 dogs in November 2011. Lynden Animal Clinic, where I work, offered to foster three of the dogs while we found homes for them. Response and the successful adoptions of the two dogs we brought home in December has encour- aged us to do more for these helpless strays.
Children need school sup- plies, toys, crafts, coloring books, crayons, toothbrushes, hair acces- sories and children’s clothing. Dogs and Cats: toys, treats,
collars and leads.
We will be doing a week of spay/neuter clinics and working in the area with the people and their animals to help benefit their lives with healthy pets! These efforts will make a difference in many lives.
You can be guaranteed that 100% of your donation goes to the animals and people.
Many companies are step- ping up to the plate and are donat- ing supplies needed, such as Orange aPEEL and the Nana Kiska Memorial Foundation who have donated Deodorizing and Regular Pet Shampoo to the effort. The Rider, Canada’s Original Western horse publication has come through with editorial cover- age and adoption advertising. Donations for the animals
The volunteers love the ani- mals and really see the difference that they are making in the Sosua community over the last few years. They hope to be able to continue the spay/neuter program and extend the area that they are able to cover.
Anyone interested in partici- pating should contact Judy Liggio - president of the organization. Full details can be obtained from the website.
Accommodations for the vis- iting vets and techs are limited. Just the cost of flight is involved.
