Broadcast TECH ACHIEVING TOP GRADES ON THE COVER

Arri’s Alexa, which was used to shoot Sherlock, was singled out by colourists as their camera of choice.

Grading has always been an area that sets excellent post houses apart from the also-rans, and over the past couple of months we’ve been spoiled by the amount of highly polished dramas on our screens. A personal favourite was Top Boy, which managed to pull off a lively and original look without feeling contrived. It was graded by The Look’s Thomas Urbye, who talks

about how he achieved such a distinctive finish and the kit he used on page 22. He’s joined by colourists from Prime Focus, Films at 59 and LipSync. The shift away from tape and the efficiencies of a file-based workflow

are explored by Evolutions operations director Owen Tyler (page 14), who says that looking after multi-camera rig-based shows is an increasingly important part of the post house’s business. The theme of adapting to serve the changing needs of today’s production companies is explored in more depth on page 16, where we look at the different services that facilities companies are offering to production firms. We also have a rundown of the key products that will be on display at

BVE. The Earls Court trade show marks the start of the exhibition and conference circuit, and of all the great kit on display, Canon’s C300 and JVC’s new 4K camcorder are likely to attract the most attention. As ever, we’re keen to hear your thoughts on the magazine so get in
