in my car, I call it Miracle Whip“. We‘d do these two liners back and forth, sometimes for an entire class period. It may sound funny, but that led to my writing of poetry. At that age, everything the rapper 2 Pac did was something I wanted to emulate. With his collection of poems I tried to base my poetry off things he would talk about mixed with experiences of my own life. At the age of 15, I had experienced way more than the typical 8th grader, so I had plenty to write about. I drew upon my family life, the loss of my mother, the success of my father to create my poetry.
The hip hop lifestyle was the other half of my poetic creations. Everything I experienced in my life I wanted to write about, regardless of if it was positive or negative, I wrote about it. Poetry became my stress relief and my outlet while I was at home. I couldn‘t count on basketball as a 24/7 escape for me. I started writing poetry on a daily basis, and even posted one of my poems on
Poetry.com. The website sent me a letter in the mail telling me that my poem had been submitted in a contest to win $10,000 and if I won would be put in a poetry book that came out that summer. I didn‘t win the contest, but it motivated me to continue writing. During the summer before I started high school, I traveled to LA to visit with a family friend. He took me to see one of his artists, CJ Hilton.
At the time, CJ Hilton hadn‘t found the success that he has now. I went to his sound check before the show started and was blown away by what I saw. I loved the way he connected with his band and the intense level of music artistry he presented. I jokingly said, „I might want to do this“. I thought I would take it up as a hobby, not realizing that I would end up pursuing this as my career. After that happened I went to Houston, TX to visit my father. He
