A time to yield...
The artwork for the album was designed by my husband Tim (not the person who made me feel world weary, as someone recently asked at a gig!). To the old adage ‘don’t work with children or animals’ some might add ‘or partners’. It was an interesting experience. It arose out of convenience but stands as proof that I could not work with all guns blazing without Tim’s unreserved support. And even I have to admit that there are limits to how much you can do yourself. He also makes a decent chick pea curry.
Costumes for my album photo shoot and tour were designed by Lu Flux whom I met by chance after I wore one of her hats in a photo shoot for UK Vogue magazine. Lu’s gorgeous dresses capture the ethereal overtones and natural underpinnings of Tempvs. Even someone whose work uniform usually comprises trackies and a baggy t-shirt cannot deny the link between fashion and performance.
A time to take...
I have also had a huge amount of support from experienced musicians on the folk and acoustic music scenes. I have tested Richard Digance’s unending patience as he painstakingly shared with me his own finger picking technique. I have learnt as an apprentice from supporting an array of phenomenal
performers. From Jez Lowe I have seen how the true essence of a song can be delivered and from Kris Drever how to sing silence. And I have lots still to learn.
And a time to give...
Whilst I am learning I hope I can also teach. During a visit to my old school (giving advice on how not to establish a career path) a 17 year old student asked whether I would record other people’s work. Having established Azania Records, I welcome the opportunity to support others who are forging their own paths and ‘doing it themselves’.
