attached, what about making running your valentine this year? There are a lot of things about running that make people fall in love with it, or even whilst doing it. It can help us get over lost loves, offer us ways to indulge in something active with our love, or prepare for a loving occasion like a wedding or party. Most of all, running is about self-love; it’s about giving yourself the time you need to de-stress, look after your muscles and mind and enjoy being outside, using your body in the most natural of ways. If we give a little love to running, it gives us twice as much back. Here are just a few of the ways:

But the same can be said of running; lots of people take up running to help them stay afloat during tricky times. It releases vital endorphins, gives us something to do with all that time we used to spend with our partner and can provide a fresh goal, that all-important thing to strive for when things get tough. Barbara Frank lives in Wimbledon, London. She began training for the New York Marathon after splitting up with her husband, which she believes helped her enormously to get through a painful period. She says: “I remember the wonderful sense of


achievement as I crossed the finishing line in New York. I had done something that was remarkable for me and it made me feel very proud. Having felt that I was not a great person, training


for and completing the NY marathon gave me a strength and feeling of self worth. If I can do it anyone can – that’s why running is wonderful.”


❤ MEET NEW PEOPLE While I am a huge advocate for running alone with an iPod on, I’ve found huge merit in running alongside others, either in a race environment or in training. Firstly, organising to meet somebody for a run forces you to do it, especially in winter when motivation can be low, and it’s also a great chance to catch up with friends or meet new ones. If you don’t already have a ready- made group of mates to run with, why not join your local running club? Clubs are by no means just for advanced runners, and usually have different categories for all abilities so that you can meet likeminded people and take your running to the next level. See
