NEWS A RACE WITH A VIEW

Entries opened on 1st February 2012 for Tor des Géants, a 330K run in the heart of the Italian Alps. Taking place from 9-16 September 2012, the race will run through Valle d’Aosta at the foot of the 4 Giants of the Alps. The beautiful landscape will hopefully make up for the altitude difference. Last year’s winner Jules-Henri Gabioud says: “For me, the most thrilling part was the Malatra Pass; you’ve almost reached the finishing line, and the landscape really does spur you on.” The 500 places sell out fast, so be quick to enter, visit www.tordesgeants.it.

One lucky runner wins trip to Mumbai

At 52 Jim Humble would have described himself as a smoker and couch potato. That was January 2011 when Jim got off his couch and took up running. Jump to 2012 and lucky Jim, from Whitley Bay in Tyne and Wear, wins his fi rst chance of running a marathon and it’s in Mumbai. He also received free fl ights to India through development charity Sightsavers. Jim certainly hasn’t picked an easy marathon. It starts before dawn so runners have a chance to beat the heat and humidity, but once that sun is up, the temperature

quickly climbs, and can reach over 30 degrees by midday. Jim is hoping for a run of 4:30. Sightsavers, which works in developing countries to prevent and cure blindness and to support those who are irreversibly blind, has worked in India for over 45 years. With an estimated quarter of the world’s blind people living in India, Sightsavers is aiming to raise £1 million to deliver eye care services to some of the poorest people in the country. Its ‘Run Mumbai’ competition will help to raise awareness of this campaign

That’s 50K (31 miles) per day. He claims he is the first person to have run a full solo crossing of the Sahara. Jukka will consume around 6,000 calories each day and cover the distance of over 40 marathons. He will track and share his record- breaking attempt using a Nokia E5 smartphone.
