Insomnia, Relationships and the Heart Getting to the Root of Insomnia

by Sally Shultis W

hat do insomnia, relationships, and the heart have in common? More than you might imagine. If the emotions of one’s heart are out of balance, then

everything else in the body will be. When the heart’s unhap- py, the brain seeks to find a solution. It will, in fact, work overtime to rebalance the heart. And as your mind races on incessantly, sleep becomes difficult, if not impossible. When the brain is in overdrive, the adrenals become

over-active. This stresses the adrenal glands, glands responsi- ble for producing adrenalin (a hormone that helps control blood pressure, heart rate, and sweating) and corticosteroids (hormones that help regulate inflammation, water levels, and levels of electrolytes). If the adrenals are stressed, they release too much or too little hormone. When this occurs, other hor- mone releasing glands become stressed, leading to more hor- monal imbalances, which further stress the body. It’s important to get to the “heart” of problems when attempting a solution for insomnia. As a healer coach, I often suggest that a client start with Emotional Release (ER). Why? When confronted with traumatic situations, we sometimes set our overpowering feelings aside, planning to deal with them later. But such stored emotions become lodged in the cells of our bodies, influencing our lives as long as they remain. If we don’t resolve these emotions, they eventually emerge as phys- ical, mental, emotional, or spiritual problems, sometimes manifesting themselves in inappropriate behaviors. If we resolve these emotions, our lives move in a more positive and productive direction. It’s best to have an ER Facilitator to release and resolve

past traumas through Emotional Release. However, if an ER Facilitator is unavailable, you can use essential oils instead. When inhaled, high quality (therapeutic grade) Essential Oils, go directly to the limbic system of the brain. This system is responsible for storing and releasing emotional trauma. Sim- ply by inhaling or using the oils topically, we can release some negative emotions. As we release negative emotions using essential oils, the heart becomes more centered. Conse- quently, the rest of the body gets back into balance. What does this have to do with relationships? When the

heart is healthy and joyous and the body is balanced (includ- ing hormonal balance), past negative emotions have been released and life can proceed anew. As one heals from trau- ma, every aspect of one’s life changes, including how we feel about and treat others. Once old emotions are released, you feel and look better. You begin to move forward in life with excitement and joy. When we’re joyous and more confident, we begin to attract similar people in our lives.

When the emotional center is improved, better balanced hormones result, which will lead to healthier sleep patterns, and ultimately better physical, emotional, mental, and spiritu- al health. This, in turn, facilitates more fulfilling relationships. Here are a few essential oils that I use to help balance the heart and alleviate insomnia.

Tranquil (Lavender, Cedarwood, and Roman Chamomile) helps quiet the mind, enabling one to fall asleep easier. It can also help relieve tension, anxiety, and restlessness and to sta- bilize and balance the body physically and emotionally.

RutaVaLa (Lavender, Valarien and Ruta) is relaxing, calming, and has sedative properties that help enhance sleep.

Sleepessence (melatonin, Lavender, Vetiver, Valarien, Tanger- ine, and Ruta) is another excellent option for one who has dif- ficulty sleeping.

Sandalwood, Cedarwood and ImmuPro (a blend of supple- ments and oils) all work well to help produce melatonin.

Nutmeg and B vitamins help support the adrenal glands.

Cypress, Grapefruit Oil and Helichrysum help support the car- diovascular system.
