Cruisin’ for the children
BOATING enthusiasts far and wide are being urged to get out with their families and friends and have some fun on the water to benefi t Aussie kids in need.
Even people without a boat can enjoy the spectacle of the Variety Splash when the fl eet leaves the Toronto Wharf after breakfast at 9am on Friday, February 17. In its 14th year, the Variety Splash is a
three-day outing for like-minded boat owners that raises money for Variety, the Children’s Charity.
The weekend is spent indulging in the fi nest food, dropping anchor, visiting communities along Lake Macquarie and enjoying a magnifi cent sightseeing experience. The Splash event has all types of vessels, from houseboats and luxurious cruisers to run-
about tinnies and canoes. The event is likened to
the Variety Bash, but on water, as it’s not a race, but rather a cruise, discovering new places with other boating enthusiasts and at the same time raising money to support children in need.

The group also takes part in the infamous Splash Olympics, a series of fun water games. All the vessels are dressed to impress, with colourful displays of streamers and fl ags. Some of the boats in the past
have even embraced a theme for the event, including “men at work” and “frangipani island”.
This year, the group will depart from
the Toronto wharf after enjoying a breakfast courtesy of the Toronto Public School P and C.
The crews will sail their way to Gwandalan
and have lunch after a cruise around the foreshores of Coal Point, Wangi Wangi Point and Pulbah Island.
Then, it will be back on the water to the Rathmines jetty for their fi rst overnight stopover and great dining in the historic Catalina Base offi cers’ mess, now known as the Rathmines Bowling Club, to party into the night. On Saturday, the food keeps on coming with a breakfast and lunch supplied by services clubs on the Rathmines foreshore and Shingle Splitters Point. The crew will then enjoy a night of entertainment with dinner served at the Toronto Hotel where they will dance the night away to a free band and amazing fi reworks display.
