Bliss Cavanagh

When did your artistic passion begin? By the age of two, my mum knew that I was heading in a creative direction. I came running in to fi nd her, smiling and clapping my little hands and saying “Mamma, come look!” I led her outside where she found that I had got my hands on a large black permanent marker and had drawn a line around the entire house. From then on, my mum gave me my own paper and pencils and never stopped encouraging me. Describe your work. I have always loved everything creative that I have ever had the chance to explore. As a child, I took classes for drawing, painting, crafts, stained glass and leadlighting, pottery and mosaics. I have always been eager to learn more but the problem of loving everything makes it hard to choose which direction I should focus on. It wasn’t until university that I really discovered my strong passion for ceramics and the female form and my passion for colour and abstract forms in my other subjects. In my honours degree this year, I am planning to combine my two loves. What inspires you? I get inspiration from everywhere that I go. Bright colours and interesting forms always catch my eye. I have a deep passion for lights and the way they illuminate colours in a much more powerful, seductive way. I often visit light shops for inspiration. What has been your greatest achievement? I feel that my greatest achievement is still in the making. I haven’t reached my full potential yet, but I feel that this year, as I undergo the honours program, I will fi nally have the chance to really explore and push my boundaries as far as they can go. So, stay tuned in a year’s time for, hopefully, my greatest exhibition. What would be your advice for budding artists? My advice for anyone with a creative passion is to explore everything that you get the opportunity to. You will be amazed at what you may fi nd you have a talent for and the amazing fulfi lment that creating gives you.
