Pullin’ out the big guns
TUG, featuring Screaming Jets members Paul Woseen (bass) and Izzy (guitar), will perform at the Wickham Park Hotel on Sunday, February 26, revisiting their roots for a some raucous fun and frivolity. They will be aided and abetted by
Rock’n’Roll Hall of Famer, legendary Rose Tattoo guitarist Rockin’ Rob Riley, a man of near-mythical status, and journeyman drummer Steve Mac, whose list of credits forms a veritable who’s who of Oz rock. The four men have been mates for years, and while traversing the countryside with their individual bands, would often run into each other (sometimes literally) at festivals, pubs, airports and truck stops. At one of these chance meetings, over a few refreshing beverages, the seeds for TUG were sown. “We met Mac years ago in Newcastle. I’ve been living in Melbourne in recent years, but originally, the Jets were all from Newcastle, and he has been playing in bands for as long as I can remember,” Woseen said. “I’ve always thought he was a great
character and a fantastic drummer, a great
man for conversation. With Rob Riley it was the same deal. We met him years ago when we were supporting Rose Tattoo. We just maintained a friendship. Rob was a fan of the Jets and we’re fans of Rockin’ Rob, and Mac had played with Rob for ages, so we thought, why don’t we have a blow?” TUG allows the guys an outlet to have some
fun away from their usual touring schedules. As well as playing selections from their
impressive combined catalogues, TUG perform some of their personal favourite rock classics, albeit in their own inimitably twisted style. “For us, it’s a great opportunity to have some fun and play some really cool music with some wonderful friends,” Mac said. “From a punters point of view, with Rob and
Izzy, you’ve got two monster guitarists on stage together, with me and Paulie laying it down and playing some of Australia’s most iconic rock songs. It’s a blast hearing people singing along with Helping Hand and Scarred for Life. My advice is, come and have a dance, a sing, and a few beers with us. Dollar for dollar it’s a bloody good night out.”

C’mon let’s go!
short ‘n’SWEET
ON the back of four top 10 albums featuring tracks from Broadway through to ’60s pop, David Campbell has released his next album and labour of love for 2011 Let’s Go. It features Campbell’s signature fresh
twist on some of the most exciting tracks to come from the early ’80s. Initially inspired by the revolutionary
second British invasion of the early ’80s, Let’s Go is sure to be the biggest summer party album of 2011 and features hits, including Let’s Go, Shout to the Top, Come on Eileen, I’m Your Man and Tainted Love. “For this album, I wanted to put a fresh spin on some dance-pop classics with a big-band brass and string sound,” Campbell said. “We went back to basics and jammed some of our favourite tunes from our adolescence, and I couldn’t be happier with the result – an album of some of my favourite hits and party anthems – reimagined in a way I know will keep my audiences on their feet.” Campbell is one of the country’s most popular entertainers. Known for his energetic shows, and selling out tours from coast to coast, you can expect nothing less from this next tour. Campbell will be playing at Belmont
16ft Sailing Club on Thursday, February 16 and Newcastle Civic Theatre on Saturday, April 21.

Snowdroppers DROP IN
THE Wickham Park Hotel will be the place to spend Oz Day Eve and warm up for the public holiday the day after, with those misfi ts from the Snowdroppers once again tearing up the Wicko stage. Last time the band came through the
Wicko it was a massive night and this time around will surpass even that hedonistic hoedown, with the Snowdroppers ribald reputation having grown to almost mythical proportions. Taking their name from Sydney
1920’s slang for cocaine addicts, the Snowdroppers delight in bringing something dark and thrillingly nostalgic and by adding their own unique interpretation (and bastardisation) of the genres, the sound is updated and made fresh with original material and a modern stage presence. Consisting of four, the Snowdroppers
hit the scene armed with their Bottom of the Trough EP, comprised of original work and reworking of 1920’s blues classics (the ones out of copyright). With an ear for the past and an eye
for the future, the Snowdroppers are guaranteed to bring something what’s greatly needed to the Australian music scene. So celebrate what makes this country
great – the public holiday sleep-in – by taking in old blues and country-inspired songs about fornication and intoxication, with the Snowdroppers on Wednesday, January 25.
