Bugs to catch and wetlands to protect
ONE of the Hunter’s claims to world fame is being celebrated next week.
On February 2, 1971 a convention on wetlands of international importance was signed in Ramsar in Iran. Each February 2, World Wetlands Day is celebrated and the this region’s designated wetlands of international importance around the Hunter estuary receive part of that worldwide attention.
The 3000 hectares of protected wetland includes the Hexham Swamp and Kooragang Island rehabilitation projects and last week, school children descended on the Ash Island section as a school holiday prelude to World Wetlands Day.
Project manager Peggy Svoboda said the children had fun outdoors while learning
about the valuable wetlands in the Hunter estuary.
“Hands-on Waterwatch activities were held on the mangrove boardwalk, in the rainforest and in the freshwater wetlands with children dip netting for water bugs,” she said.
“The Kooragang projects involve restoring valuable wildlife habitat for birds, frogs, fi sh and prawns, including mangroves, salt marsh and open water habitat.” To celebrate World Wetlands Day, the Catchment Management Authority (CMA) will be holding a display at Wallsend Stockland shopping centre showcasing the Hexham and Kooragang projects.’
The international theme this year
is “Wetlands and Tourism - a great experience”. “The CMA invites the community to come and visit our wetland display and find out what has been done to rehabilitate our local Hunter estuary wetlands and the best spots for bird watching, fishing, boating, cycling and walking,” Ms Svoboda said.
The display will run from Thursday, February 2 until Saturday, February 4.’
