kick-start to new year
THE Stillsons are kicking off 2012 with their mammoth summer tour. 2011 was a big year for the Melbourne-
based country roots band. They not only released their sophomore album Earnest, but they also thrilled audiences across Australia with their eclectic live shows, many of them extending up to three hours of original material. Justin Bernasconi (guitar) and Cat

ALLY B are a young and exciting duo that features tight male-female harmonies. Encompassing the talents of Alisha Mitchell and Jason Bone, the duo performs a wide range of music from blues, through to pop, funk and rock. Lead singer Mitchell has performed in
many bands such as Phonic and the Funky Do Da’s and has also featured in many musical productions throughout Newcastle and Sydney. Her powerful voice, combined with her vibrant personality, make her a remarkable performer. Jason Bone has performed in many
bands throughout Newcastle, such as Fumi Boca, Morgan Evans, Mark Wells and the Good. He has also featured on numerous recordings and has toured both nationally and internationally. Ally B has a large and diverse repertoire
that caters for all audiences. Ally B performs at the Prince of Wales
on Friday, January 27.
FIRST Seed Ripening, the second album by Katie Noonan’s jazz trio of 14 years Elixir, was released last August and has met with great response. Refl ective, brooding and hauntingly
beautiful, Elixir is Noonan, her saxophonist husband Zac Hurren (winner of the national jazz award 2009) and Stephen Magnusson, regarded by many as Australia’s fi nest jazz guitarist. First Seed Ripening is largely inspired
by the words of legendary Australian poet Thomas Shapcott, but also features inspired covers, or “tributes” as Noonan refers to them, of artists such as Joni Mitchell, Radiohead and Split Enz. Live, the band have been known to
throw all manner of “tributes” into the mix. After launching the album across the
country, Elixir are having a second national run.
Elixir will be playing at Lizotte’s Newcastle on Saturday, February 4.

of each other’s songwriting and harmony singing. The band caught the attention Ben Franz
(the Waifs) who joined the group in January 2010, adding his deft touch on pedal steel guitar and vocals. Joining the Stillsons’ touring party for a
third time is Edmondo Ammendola (Augie March) on the bass. They will be playing at the Grand
Junction Hotel on Sunday, January 29.
