A FREE look at one of Newcastle’s icons, a free jaunt around Newcastle Harbour and entry to a free country are being offered as part of Australia Day in Newcastle tomorrow (Thursday). After being closed to the public for decades, Nobbys lighthouse has become a popular tourist attraction with 6745 people making the breakwater trek since it was reopened last July.
The landmark will be open
tomorrow, in addition to a regular throwing open of the gates on the fi rst and thirds Sundays of each month. Residents and visitors to the city will get a great chance to view the Port of Newcastle from the water’s vantage point. Newcastle Port Corporation is chartering one of the Newcastle to Stockton ferries to run free tours of the port as a main attraction for Australia Day festivities. They will run from Queens Wharf every hour on the hour from 9am to 5pm inclusive. Port Corp CEO Gary Webb said there was an increasing interest in the activities of the port, with more than 3900 shipping movements being recorded on an annual basis to import and export more than 114 million tonnes of cargo. “The tours run for about 40 minutes and will showcase different aspects of the working port which has been in commercial operation since 1799,” he said.
As part of the celebrations, 56 people from 24 countries will become Australian citizens during a ceremony at City Hall. Newcastle lord mayor John Tate said he was looking forward to welcoming the city’s newest citizens as they showed their commitment to this country.
“This is of course a very important and exciting day for those people who have decided to call Australia home,” he said.
POPULAR TREK:
Nobbys will welcome the public tomorrow.
“But whether we are Australians by birth or by choice, our citizenship is something we should all be celebrating on Australia Day.” The ceremony will begin at 8.30am and include the announcement of Newcastle citizen, young citizen and community group of the year.
In a poignant reminder of what it means
to be an Australian, Newcastle members from the Royal Australian Regiment (RAR) will remember the 32 Australian soldiers killed in Afghanistan by taking part in the fi rst ever “Stomp to Support”, which aims to raise more than $120,000 for Legacy Australia. Eight Hunter men will march 32 kilometres, joining ex and current serving RAR members from 13 locations across the country to generate funds for Legacy Australia. Legacy supports Australian Defence Force families that are suffering fi nancially and socially after the death or serious injury of their spouse or parent, during or after their active service.
The Newcastle Stomp will depart from
Raymond Terrace Bowling Club at 6am on Australia Day. The stompers will march to Adamstown Army Reserve Depot.
