DID YOU KNOW? Australians all... Information in this section is sourced from the internet, including Wikipedia, company websites and personal accounts.
AS we celebrate another Australia Day tomorrow, the day the First Fleet arrived in Sydney Cove, now is a good time to delve a little into our country and see what’s uncovered. Australia was not always in the location and shape it is today. Millions of years ago, it was part of the great land mass called Gondwanaland. Later on, the continent of Australia began to drift away from this great land mass and, around the Mesozoic era, dinosaurs roamed the land. After the death of dinosaurs, mammals began to dominate, and the fi rst signs of mankind can be traced back with the Aboriginal people, believed to be one of oldest and longest- surviving cultures in the world, dating back at least 50,000 years.
The low-down - Australia has one of the highest degrees of city-dwelling concentration in the world. Despite this, however, Australia, taking in the whole landmass, has an average of only three people per square kilometre, making it one of the lowest population densities in the world. - The average Australian will consume 165,000 eggs in his or her lifetime. - Melbourne has the largest remaining tram public transport system in the world.
- Australia’s fi rst television station was Channel 9, which opened in Sydney in 1956. - The most medals Australia has ever won at an Olympic Games was in the 2000 Sydney games, a total of 58 medals. - The average Australian will consume 18 beef cattle and 90 sheep in his or her lifetime. - The fi rst-ever car to be mass produced in Australia was the FX Holden (model 48-215). This was produced at Fishermans Bend, Victoria in 1948. - The Great Barrier Reef is the longest reef in the world at more than 2010 kilometres. - Kalgoorlie in Western Australia is the largest electorate spanning 2,225,278 square kilometres. - Australian women won the right to vote in 1902, nine years after New Zealand and 26 years before England. - The main source of immigrants to Australia is the UK and Ireland, totalling 6.35 per cent of all immigrants. The second largest source of immigrants is from Australia’s neighbour New Zealand, making 1.70 per cent of all immigrants. - Australia is the smallest continent in the world and is three times larger than the largest island (Greenland) in the world. - The fi rst ever meeting of the Australian Labor Party (also the fi rst political party to form, in 1891) was held under a gum tree at Barcaldine, Queensland. - Uluru (Ayers Rock) is more than eight kilometres in circumference. - The average Australian will consume half a tonne of cheese, eight tonnes of fruit and ten tonnes of vegetables in his or her lifetime.

Drop bears Ask any backpacking international visitor and they’ll tell you of the stories regaled in the pubs across Australia of our infamous drop bear. Here’s the deal. - Drop bears are fi ctitious (but don’t tell the backpackers), they are not carnivorous koalas that inhabit treetops and attack their prey by dropping onto their heads from above. - They are similar in folklore to the jackalope, hoop snake, wild haggis and snipe hunt. - Having a fork in your hair to deter them will only make you look silly and smearing vegemite or toothpaste behind your ears will do nothing more than scare off any potential dates.
