58 CATUS CRICKET CLUB

Who are we?

some of us should know better than to still be playing cricket.

blokes, builders, carpenters, retirees and other ne’er do wells who love a game of cricket; with ages range from 17 to an age where

We are a bunch of ordinary

Personally, for example, I thought I had hung up my boots 10 years ago, having played for 20 years in the North-East Durham League. However, on retiring in 2006 and moving to France, I discovered Catus Cricket Club and with the joy of playing again and forging new friendships, I have no regrets. Although, I have to confess that honestly my body is often telling me differently throughout the Monday following a game, although Ibuprofen is a wonderful invention.

Where are we?

We play in a tranquil, picturesque setting on an all weather wicket at Lac Vert, Catus. To get there you drive in the main entrance to Lac Vert, follow the road until you cross the bridge, turn left and go past the football pitch and stand and there you will find us.

Who do we play?

We play teams such as Angouleme, Eymet and Toulouse in a league structure which is for an 8 week period in May and June. However, as the summer vacation approaches we look forward to more home fixtures, many against touring sides, such as Bristol Venturers, Beckenham Dads, and from Scotland, the

Silly Mid-Offers, who regaled us with bagpipes at the end of the match last year.

Many of us are still buzzing from our last game of this season when, despite conceding roughly 25 years per player, we rolled back the years and defeated a decent team from Nuffield College in London.

When do we play?

From April to September, usually on a Sunday afternoon; we also have nets on a Wednesday at Catus at 6.00pm., followed by a few beers and, as the Irish would say, "the craic".

What do we want?

Like many Cricket Clubs we need more players, regardless of sex, age, ability, or nationality, although a few more decent players would obviously be a bonus in order to become more competitive. Many reading this article may feel their cricketing days are over but if I can resurrect my career after a 10 year lay-off then I’m sure many others would be able to! The only other requirement I can think of is to be willing to accept praise and ridicule in equal measure.

Interested?

If so, contact me - martin.kavanagh@orange.fr or phone 0565368859 or simply turn up at the nets starting in March.

Anything else?

Yes, we have a popular quiz night at the Auberge de Quercy, Salviac on the first Thursday of each month at 8pm. We also do a mean social function and our September BBQ is legendary.
