PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
You're a Member, Too! T
he GHBA has more than 1,500 member firms. And every employee of those companies is a member of GHBA.
Do those employees know that they are a member, too? I don’t think so. And that is a problem we need to solve.
By GHBA President WILL HOLDER, Trendmaker Homes
If you spend enough time around the association you will quickly notice that there are a lot of the same faces around the table, year in and year out. The long term viability of the association depends on new blood entering the mix.
"Trough the association’s
educational programs and by participating in specific councils, employee members can become more
professional, more informed and
more capable of contributing to the job they have today and the job they will have in the future."
If every member firm has, let’s just say, 10 employees, that is more than 15,000 individual members. That is a lot of members! Most of which are never seen around the association. There are a lot of people out there that simply don’t know or understand that the resources of the association are here today, waiting to help them develop new business contacts, continue their industry specific education and develop and protect their career by participating in urgent industry matters.
Envision the association with a much broader base of new faces attending events, joining councils and putting their stamp on the industry that is their professional home.
That is my vision for GHBA!
I believe that there are employees of member firms that simply do not understand that they too can attend council meetings specific to their industry interest. We need young leaders coming to the association and attending and contributing to the industry that will likely be their career for decades.
In 2012, I plan on reaching out to the leaders of our 1,500 member firms to ask that their company participate in a “You’re A Member Too” program. We are going to develop and promote a campaign to reach
6
out and educate employee members about the association.
The You’re A Member Too campaign is going to reach deep inside every member firm to communicate to all employee members about the opportunities within the association that can help them become better today at what they do inside their company. Through the association’s educational programs and by participating in specific councils, employee members can become more professional, more informed and more capable of contributing to the job they have today and the job they will have in the future.
At Trendmaker every employee must have a written IDP, an Individual Development Plan. That plan is rewritten every year with their supervisor. The purpose of the plan is to ensure that every employee develops themselves professionally every year. The GHBA is a perfect place for homebuilding industry professionals to develop themselves. It is a development resource to the company and to the employee. We use the GHBA resources at Trendmaker, and I hope your company will too.
I am asking you to join me in the future vision of the association with lots of new participating employee members attending events, attending educational classes and contributing to the councils that are closest to their field within the industry. That vision is a healthy vision of not only our beloved GHBA, but a healthy vision of our industry.
I want to see our association and our industry infused with bold, smart, young industry professionals developing themselves and their business and eventually taking leadership positions in GHBA and with their companies. Houston’s homebuilding industry has a bright future and we have got to reach out and find those bright leaders of tomorrow!
