Let Us Give Thanks!

Now, as dusk settles upon 2011 and a new dawn rises on 2012, it’s a good time to reflect on our blessings and achievements. I’d like to serve as a catalyst for this process by sharing some industry accomplishments for which I’m particularly thankful.

First and foremost, I’m grateful for the honor of being allowed to serve, for a second year, as the chairperson of IHRSA’s board of directors, and to continue working with its 13 dedicated members, as well as with the association’s incredibly talented and committed staff.

Art Curtis IHRSA Chairperson

I’m thankful for the passion, energy, intelligence, and skills of so many of the industry’s leaders, who have once again demonstrated how resilient the fitness business is. Even though the recovery from the Great Recession has been painfully slow, many of them, along with their staffs, have found ways to overcome all of the challenges presented. They’ve been there for their members, and they’ve prospered. I’m thrilled that our industry is once again reporting growth in the number of club memberships. The IHRSA Health Club Consumer Report: 2011 Health Club Activity, Usage, Trends, & Analysis notes that, between 2009 and 2010, the number of members in the U.S. rose by more than 5 million people, a 10.5% increase.

I’m equally pleased that many of the industry’s suppliers have seen their sales figures climb. The October issue of CBI noted that a number of the world’s largest fitness equipment companies have improved their key metrics. This issue documents their ongoing progress (see “Public Compa- nies Post Healthy Increases,” pg. 20). Their success is critical to our success as club operators.

As the chairperson of IHRSA, I’m especially thankful that, under the leadership of President and CEO Joe Moore, the association has produced another positive financial result for the year, allowing it to continue to rebuild our reserves. Like many of you, IHRSA has struggled with the recent economic downturn, and, like you, it’s also responded in such a way as to continue providing its members with valuable services, allowing them, in turn, to improve, expand, and prosper.

Finally, I’m eternally grateful for the vigilance, talent, and persistence of IHRSA’s public policy team, which, during the past year, has racked up a virtually perfect record.

In many ways, 2011 has been an excellent year. Now, let’s look forward to 2012.

Have a wonderful holiday season! —| – Art Curtis, artcurtis31@gmail.com
