Questions? IHRSA 2012 Has the Answers!
Granted, at the moment, the economy poses significant challenges. At the same time, however, our industry enjoys dramatic opportunities. You just need to learn about them! The best place, without qualification, to do so is at IHRSA’s 31st Annual International Convention and Trade Show in Los Angeles.
I
was reminded how many opportunities have recently emerged when I spoke with an operator who was able to favorably renegotiate lease terms on an exist- ing club. The landlord was dealing with a soft real estate market and didn’t want to lose a good tenant. This is the sort of story that I’m hearing more and more frequently.
Joe Moore IHRSA President & CEO
Today, there are real deals to be had because vacancies are up in strip malls and shopping centers across the country. According to CoStar Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: CSGP), a Boston-based com- mercial real estate research firm, health clubs accounted for 8.8% of the new leases signed thus far this year by U.S. retail chains—up from 7.9% at the same point last year. This represents a 57% increase, since 2007, in the square footage occupied by clubs, to more than 70 million square feet.
Will this trend continue? If you attend IHRSA 2012, you may well find out.
IHRSA’s convention and trade show, which will
take place March 14–17, is the most information- dense, networking-intense, and idea-and-opportunity- rich, industry-specific gathering in the world. The 2012 edition will feature some 120 talented presenters, nearly 100 educational sessions, and five exciting general sessions that will be translated into both Spanish and Russian.
The three keynote speakers, united by the theme “Get Inspired! Business Advice You Can Use,” are:
• William Taylor, the founding editor of Fast Company and best-selling author of five books on

business: Taylor will speak on “Practically Radical: Transforming Your Company and Challenging Yourself” on March 14. His appearance is sponsored by Matrix Fitness.
• Simon Sinek, an author and the founder of Simon Sinek, Inc., which works to develop “the next generation of great leaders”: His presentation, on March 14, will explore “How Great Leaders Inspire Action,” and is sponsored by Precor.
• Guy Kawasaki, an author, entrepreneur, consultant, venture capitalist, and former Chief Evangelist for Apple, Inc.: A world-class expert on motivation, Kawasaki will explore “The Art of Enchantment,” on March 16. His presentation is sponsored by Technogym.
I’ve seen videos of all three of them … and they’re spectacular! I, for my part, will share a fair amount of information and, hopefully, a few valuable insights in a “State of the Industry Report” on March 15. The final general session will be a unique open forum with the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition (PCFSN), a close ally in IHRSA’s campaign to improve the health of all Americans. This special event is sponsored by SPRI Products, Inc.
What questions do you have, what do you need to know to deal with today’s challenges and prepare for tomorrow’s most promising possibilities? Will the industry continue to grow? Will the price of dues keep declining? Will the number of clubs increase? Which business models will prosper and which will fail? You’ ll find the answers—and the new opportunities—at IHRSA 2012. —|
