| IHRSA Report | Success by Association
Market strength mandates a $2.5- million renovation
venues—all have continued to proliferate, and now include a stretching room, indoor soccer courts, a boxing gym, a chiropractic care center, and a hair salon.
“As far as we’re concerned, IHRSA has ”
training complex; an upscale café; a greater variety of classes (70-plus per week); and on-premises dry cleaning. Shortly thereafter, they’ll also get to enjoy a new outdoor pool with a sun deck and barbecues. Given that Kings Court already owns its land, has
always been the Blue Book of the industry, informing us about changes in the business and up-and-coming trends.
But, as the Turcos learned long ago, tomorrow
constantly clamors for more, and different, and better. As the club is about to pass into the hands of a third generation of Turco family members, the own- ers are embarking on an ambitious, thoroughgoing $2.5-million renovation. “We’re planning on a com- plete revamp of both the facility and the brand,” Turco explains. “The building and all of the basics are already here, but, in terms of the structure itself, we’d fallen a bit behind since we opened in the ’80s. What we need now is a facelift, a fresh design, to launch Kings Court into the next 30 years.” The first phase of the renovation, scheduled for completion next year, will provide members with an indoor soccer area with real turf; a private personal-
sound cost controls in place, and even owns external retail space, Turco expects to recoup his investment within five years. “We’re considering opening other locations in the near future,” he reports, “and even, possibly, franchising our brand.” As much as Turco appreciates the “grow” and “promote” imperatives of IHRSA’s corporate mission, he’s most grateful for what it’s done to “protect” both the industry and, in turn, his business. “IHRSA lobbyists have been very effective in supporting our industry and Kings Court,” he says. “We’re up against a government that has tremendous power, and IHRSA has been able to stand up for us finan- cially and in numerous other ways. As far as Cap- itol Hill is concerned, IHRSA has become a very powerful advocate and watchdog.
“Kings Court and the industry have both come a long way over the last three decades,” he says, “and IHRSA’s been a big part of that.” —|
