The House of Commons had its

very first debate as a result of a public petition with 100,000 signatures. The Commons fell completely silent for a debate on the

disaster.

It was a very emotional debate and Steve Rotheram, MP for Liverpool Walton made one of the best speeches the Commons has seen for years. He pleaded for the Governmenet to release all the papers with regards to the disaster to "give the 96 dead the justice they deserve". He procededed to "right one wrong tonight" by reading out the names and ages of the 96 who died. The debate resulted in the Government committing to release all documents. A real victory for the Parliament and the 100,000 petition.
