ISSUE NUMBER 59 SEnine
When the magazine started out fi ve years ago, part of the remit was to engage the people of Eltham, real people who live work and play in Eltham, and introduce them to the good that is going on in the community every single day. This was not rose coloured glasses journalism but just another view of our local society. If a young lad steals a handbag it makes the news, however if a group of young girls from Eltham swim the channel to raise funds for charity (P29) it hardly registers.
The fi rst task was raising the community awareness of people in our community who were doing wonderful and positive things, judging from the feedback received I think we have moved a long way toward that goal.
Another task was to highlight the need for social responsibility. This is a diffi cult one to measure, however given the low level of violence on the high street during the disturbances of a month ago one might suggest that the people of Eltham do have a sense of social order. Is this true and did SEnine have a role in it? It is hard to know, but we like to think so.
On our agenda was to increase tolerance of other people, their religion and their culture, and point out that racial hatred and abuse or violence is not a thing we want in our society. Eltham has seen a big increase in ethnic diversity over the past 10 years. Could this be because ethnic minorities are comfortable in the area? If that is so then we as a society have moved toward a more open accepting and tolerant outlook.

Did SEnine contribute toward making Eltham a better place to live? We hope so..
Another string to the bow of goals for the magazine was to get people to support local businesses. When the magazine started, no one could have predicted that there would be a Global Financial Crisis (GFC). But even with that the magazine has continued to encourage the people of Eltham to support local traders and the magazine has written thousands of (free) words about and for businesses in Eltham
Have we been successful? I believe that even though some businesses big and small have closed that Eltham High Street is faring better than many. I drove down Trafalgar Road, Greenwich recently and was surprised to see so many shops closed.
I took the time to look through the fi rst few issues of the magazine and in particular the advertisers. Businesses that were in the fi rst few issues and are still trading are Mayday Cars, Alan's of Eltham, Hair By Friends, Chapman's Fine Decor, Normans Music, Laura C Jewellers, Hardy Flooring , Welling Fireplaces, Chattertons, Harrison Ingram, San Fairy Anne, RCD Prints.
In fact, only three businesses that appeared in the fi rst issue are no longer trading. Did SEnine have an infl uence in helping the High Street to be more successful? We like to think so and from the reports we get from advertisers, we feel safe and proud in making that claim.
OCTOBER 2011
However, the most important thing to remember is your contribution. You read the magazine, you make Eltham what it is, you are the ones that have been supporting local traders, and you are the ones that have lived, worked, achieved and made Eltham better than it was in the past.
From My Desk
There is one special group of people that I would like to mention. They are Friends of SEnine. This group go much further than supporting local events and businesses. They fi nancially support the magazine. Each year this group send along their cheques for £24.00 (£34.00 if sent by Royal Mail) to support the magazine and help keep it viable.
It has been a tough couple of years and I am almost certain that had it not been for the support of these wonderful and socially conscious people the magazine might not be here today. Thank you.
The magazine could use more supporters. How about you? Are you willing to contribute £24.00 (£34.00xRM) to make sure the magazine is here fi ve years on? I hope so. If we were to double the current number of supporters, it would insure the magazine stayed in the black.
Enjoy life: Enjoy Eltham.
