COMMUNITY ELTHAM Greenholm Road - Life in 1911

In 2003 a book was published to celebrate the first hundred year of Greenholm Road, Eltham Park. With the 1911 census being available and Greenholm Road by then a thriving community of 40 houses the author Gaynor Wingham decided on another challenge.

"I have been researching in some detail what life was like in Eltham in 1911 and researching all the families who lived in Greenholm Road", said Gaynor. "With the help of previous censuses I have also been looking at where the families came from and, where I can, what happened to them after 1911".

With the help of newspapers and the web what was going on nationally and in Eltham at the time of the 1911 census is being explored. It was a fascinating time.

The 1911 census was completed by the householders themselves and you can see how they wrote and how they described their occupations and places

of birth. In 1911 there were 174 people living in Greenholm Road.

Some interesting characters have already been uncovered. Luigi Antonio Casartelli living at number 8 was of Italian descent (although born in Liverpool with the name Louis Anthony). He is aged 37 and describes himself as a ‘Journalist’. Presumably no phone hacking in those days. Research has found he had very interesting forbears from opticians to a Bishop.

There were several Head teachers. George Bishop at number 11 was the Head teacher of Pope St School (Now Wyborne at New Eltham). Frederick Francis, we know, was the former Head of Roper St School, by 1911 he had retired. However his daughter Ethel aged 24 was working as a ‘Certifi cated Elementary Teacher'. Catherine Guy at number 16 was aged 40 and the Head teacher. Searching Teacher Registration records shows she was the Head teacher of a school for disabled children in Greenwich.

Sadly a number of the young Greenholm lads shown in the 1911 census died in World War One, including Douglas Rowe (number 2), William Gardiner Elder (number 36) and Eric James Marshall (number 23), Robert Gant (Number 26) and Harold Shearing (number 15).
