Christchurch Centenary Near
the end of Eltham High Street, opposite the
junction of Footscray Road, stand the Roman Catholic Church of Christchurch, and it has stood there for just short of a hundred years. The 19th October this year sees the one hundredth anniversary of the laying of the Foundation stone and on the 9th November next year the opening of the Church will be celebrated.
St Mary’s Centre was originally a house and in 1870 it became a convent school containing a chapel. In 1890 a small church called St Mary’s was built next to the house to serve the Catholic community in the area. 1906 saw the arrival of an order of priests, the Cannons Regular of the Lateran to serve the growing parish. The Cannons are still the Priests responsible for the Parish. In 1910 when a larger church was needed Eagle House was purchased and became the Priory and subsequently the Church was built.

Amongst the many hidden treasures of Christchurch are eight stunning coloured stained glass windows and tucked away behind the Church is the only original garden remaining in the High Street surrounded by the original 18th century brick walls.
Christchurch is an important focal point for the Catholics of Eltham and many important landmarks in our lives take place there. For example up until the end of 2010, 6,051 Baptisms and 1,628 Weddings have taken place. There have been numerous First Communions, Confi rmations and Funerals, as well as the weekly events of Masses and Confessions.
During the centenary year there will be numerous events to celebrate this anniversary, the fi rst of which will be a Flower Festival on the 7th, 8th and 9th October. The Church will be open to all the people of Eltham and aff ord them the opportunity to view this fi ne
building and its windows, together with its tranquil garden. As well as many fi ne fl oral displays on show there will also be a chance to view the many fi ne textiles, including vestments and altar fronts that are used in the life of the Church. Many of these have been crafted by the people of the parish, including the magnifi cent Millennium wall hanging. Over the three days there will be organ recitals, music, singing and talks.
A warm welcome is extended to you all to call into Church to see what lies behind the walls at the end of the High Street. More information www.
