Schools in top gear


For the third year running, a team from BEECHWOOD PARK SCHOOL in Hertfordshire triumphed over 14,000 school pupils to win the Toyota Technology Challenge. Hot Fuel the name of the winning team comprising Charlie Ford, George Poole, Tom Abrey (all 13) and Max Holben (12) competed in the solar power car category of the competition. Te school was awarded £1,000 prize money and a holiday to Spain for team members.


OUNDLE SCHOOL held a classic and vintage car display in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust with a number of former pupils returning to the school with their vehicles, including a 1915


Winning music


Seventy per cent of music students from Bedales were awarded a merit or a distinction in their ABRSM examinations while LVS Ascot pupil, Megan Hitchcock, won the Battle of the Bands competition – solo category – and has performed at the O2 during the summer.

Model T Ford and a 2008 F430 Ferrari Spider. Other attractions included a 1928 Bentley, a 1937 Rolls Royce, a 1938 Speed 25 Alvis and two cars from Alex Patrick’s museum, a 1931 Invicta 4.5 and a 1985 Rolls Royce Silver Spur Centenary Edition.


BRUERN ABBEY’s sports day was rounded off with a display of vintage cars paraded by parents, one of whom arrived, from the airport, just in time, to join the lap of honour. Little boys rushed around in ecstasy, while mothers covered their ears against the roaring engine noise and prayed that it would be some time before their sons would get behind the wheel of one of these big beasts.


Royal visit


Barfield pupil Indra Tason was introduced to HRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall when they visited the newly restored Watts Gallery, in Compton. Indra is the youngest “Friend” of the Watts Gallery and was


asked to officially lock the doors to it two-and-a-half years ago in preparation for its restoration. Indra presented the Duchess of Cornwall with the key to symbolise the reopening of the gallery after an extensive restoration, supported by a £4.9 million grant from the

Cothill head Neil Brookes takes up the reigns at The Old Malthouse and is being replaced by Duncan Bailey.
